With Smart Lock, you can use your nearby Android phone to sign in or unlock your Pixelbook.
Smart Lock requirements
For your Chrome OS device, you'll need::
- A connected Android phone
- An internet connection
- To be and signed in to the same Google Account as your phone.

For your phone, you'll need:
- Android version L-MR1 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
- Your phone unlocked and with you
- Bluetooth turned on
- Automatic unlock turned on
- Screen lock set up
You can use one phone to unlock more than one Google Account on your device, or the same account on different devices, as long as you're signed in to the same accounts on your phone.
Also, the account you're unlocking can't be an Android for Work account.
Note: If you're using your device at work or school, your administrator might have turned off phone unlock. If you can't turn it on, ask your administrator for help.
Use Smart Lock
Once you connect your Android phone, you'll see a notification on your phone letting you know it's ready to use to unlock your device. If you don't receive a notification within a few minutes, request verification again.
If you want Smart Lock to also sign you in to your device, follow these steps:
- Select the time in the bottom right corner of your screen.
- Select Settings
- Under "Connected devices," select your Android phone.
- Select Smart Lock and enter your password.
- Select Unlock device and sign in to Google Account.
Now when your Android phone is nearby, your device will unlock and you'll be signed in.
Turn off Smart Lock
You can turn Smart Lock off or on at any time.
- Select the time in the bottom right corner of your screen.
- Select Settings
- Under "Connected devices," select your Android phone.
- Select the toggle next to "Smart Lock" to turn it off.
Fix problems with Smart Lock
Once you connect your Android phone, you should receive a notification on your phone that Smart Lock is ready to use. If you didn't get this notification, you might need to request verification again. To check the status and request verification:
- At the bottom right, select the time to open your status area.
- Select Settings
- Under "Connected devices," select your Android phone.
- If the status is "Pending" and it's been a few minutes since you connected with your phone, select the Verify button to submit another request.
- You'll get a notification on your phone when Smart Lock is activated.
If you can't unlock your device with your Android phone, make sure both devices:
- Are connected to the internet
- Have been restarted recently
If you see a lock icon , point to it to learn more about the error and how to fix it.
Help keep your personal information secure
- When you're not using your device, always lock your screen.
- If your Android phone or device is ever stolen, change your Google Account password immediately. For extra security, reset your Android phone from your computer, phone, or tablet.
Note: Smart Lock automatically turns on Bluetooth for your compatible devices during setup.
