Take a selfie on your Pixel phone or tablet

You can use the front camera on your Pixel device to take a self-portrait (selfie).

Important: To get selfie help with verbal cues using Guided Frame, learn how to use accessibility features on your Camera app.

Flip your lens

  1. Open your Camera appGoogle Camera. Learn how.
  2. To swap to your front camera, tap SwitchSwitch camera.
  3. Tap CaptureCapture photo.
To flip your lens for a selfie without buttons: 
  1. Twist your device away from you and back.
  2. To flip your lens again, repeat step 1. Learn how to turn gestures on or off.

Choose how selfies are saved

You can save your selfies as mirrored or non-mirrored photos. If you save a selfie as previewed, it won’t appear reversed after you take a selfie.

To mirror or non-mirror your selfies, in your camera, at the top, tap the down arrow Down arrow, then Settings Settings. Tap Save selfie as previewed.

Change the appearance of a selfie

Retouch a selfie

You can use face retouching on selfies or portrait mode photos.

  1. To retouch a selfie or portrait mode photo, tap the down arrow Down arrow.
  2. Under 'Face retouching':
    • Pixel 4a (5G) and later: tap Subtle or Smooth.
    • Pixel 4a and earlier: tap Natural or Smooth.

Tip: The face retouching results only show in the final photo.

Brighten a selfie

Before you can brighten selfies, you must switch to the front camera. To brighten selfies, tap the down arrow Down arrow , then Selfie illumination Selfie illumination

Zoom out on a selfie (Pixel 3 only)

The Pixel 3 has a super-wide front camera, so that you can zoom out on a selfie. To fit more people in your photo, before you take a selfie, use the slider at the bottom of the screen.

Take a hands-free selfie

You can take a hands-free selfie on your Pixel device with the:

  • Camera timer.
  • Palm timer.
  • Google Assistant.

To take a selfie with the timer:

  1. Open the Camera app Google Camera.
  2. At the top, tap Settings Settings.
  3. On the 'Timer' screen, tap 3 seconds or 10 seconds .
  4. To start the timer's countdown, tap Capture Capture photo .
Start a selfie timer with your hand

Important: This feature is only available on Pixel 6 and later, including Fold.

To start a selfie timer with your hand on your Pixel device:

  1. Open the Camera app Google Camera.
  2. When your device's camera timer is on, you can raise your hand in front of the camera to start the countdown.
  3. To use the palm timer, make sure that:
    • Your face is in frame.
    • Your palm is straight and facing the camera.
    • Both your face and palm are fully visible.

 

Take a selfie with your voice

You can take a hands-free photo with your voice on your Pixel device with Google Assistant. Learn how to set up Google Assistant here.

To take a hands-free photo with your voice:

  1. Open the Camera app Google Camera.
  2. Place your device on a stable surface.
  3. Step away, into the camera's frame.
    • To start a camera timer with your voice, say 'Hey Google, take a picture'. After a three-second delay, your phone will take a photo.
