Change volume, sound & vibrate settings on your Pixel phone

You can make your phone's volume louder or quieter. You can also change your ringtone, sound, and vibration.

Important:

Turn your volume up or down

  1. Press a volume button.
  2. At the right, tap the Menu More.
  3. Slide the volume levels to where you want them:
    • Media volume: Music, videos, games, and other media
    • Call volume: Volume of the other person during a call
    • Ring Volume
    • Notification volume
    • Alarm volume

Tips:

  • To have your Google Assistant change your phone's volume for you, say or tap Hey Google, change volume.
  • If your phone is paired to more than one Bluetooth device, you can change where you hear music, videos, and games. Under "Media volume," tap Play media to.
  • When you press a volume button, the volume that changes depends on what you're doing. For example, if you're watching a movie, the movie volume changes. If you press your volume buttons when you're not listening to anything, your media volume changes.

Control audio you’re actively playing

To choose the right audio controls for the current media and device you’re actively listening to, use the sidebar volume menu.

  1. Press a Volume button.
  2. The volume control panel appears.
  3. Check the connected device and media options.
  4. Choose your desired sound preferences.

Turn on vibrate or mute

  1. Press a volume button.
  2. At the right, above the slider, tap Ring .
    • To turn on vibrate, tap Vibrate .
    • To mute, tap Mute .

Tips:

  • To turn the ring or sound back on your phone, turn off Vibrate  or turn on Ring .
  • To silence your phone's ring when you receive a call, press a volume button.
Turn off some sounds and vibrations
You can silence all sounds, or turn on certain sounds like alarms or important calls.
Turn on Adaptive alert vibration (Pixel 6a)

You can control the strength of alert haptics (vibrations) when your phone is still and facing up.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration and then Vibrations & haptics and then Adaptive alert vibration.
  3. Turn on Adaptive alert vibration.
Turn on Adaptive vibration (Pixel 7 & later, including Fold)

When you turn on Adaptive vibration, it automatically adjusts the vibration strength of your Pixel phone based on your environment. It uses your phone’s microphone and other sensors to adjust the vibration intensity of your ringtone, notifications, and alerts.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration and then Vibrations & haptics and then Adaptive Vibration.
  3. Turn on Use Adaptive Vibration.

Make all phone calls vibrate
  1. Press a volume button.
  2. At the right, tap the Menu More.
  3. If needed, tap See more.
  4. Turn on Vibrate for calls. Or tap Vibration & haptics and then Vibrate for calls and then Turn on Always vibrate.
Change what happens when you press power + volume up (Pixel 5a & earlier)
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration And then Shortcut to prevent ringing.
  3. Turn Prevent ringing on or off.
  4. Choose what happens when you press Power and Volume up:
    • Vibrate: Phone calls and notifications vibrate
    • Mute: Phone calls and notifications are silent

Tip: To quickly turn on vibrate, press Power + Volume up.

Change ringtones

Change your ringtone
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration And then Phone ringtone.
  3. Pick a ringtone.
  4. Tap Save.

Assign a ringtone to someone
  1. Open your phone's Contacts app .
  2. Tap a contact.
  3. Tap More And then Set ringtone.
  4. Choose a ringtone.
  5. Tap Save.

Download more ringtones from ringtone apps in the Google Play Store Google Play.

Transfer a ringtone from a computer

  1. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable. Learn how to transfer files by USB.
  2. In the window that opens, find the "Ringtones" folder. Copy your music file (MP3) into the "Ringtones" folder.
  3. Disconnect your phone from your computer.

Tip: Alarm and phone ringtones use different folders. Learn how to add ringtones for alarms.

Change your notification sound

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration And then Default notification sound.
  3. Choose a sound.
  4. Tap Save.

Tip: You can choose different notification sounds for different apps. Use the settings menu inside each app. For example, learn how to change Gmail notifications.

Make your notifications vibrate

Some apps let you choose whether to vibrate for their notifications. Learn how to change notifications for certain apps.

Choose keyboard sounds & vibrations

When you type, you can turn the keyboard vibration feedback on or off.

To turn the keyboard vibration on or off:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration And then Vibration & haptics.
  3. Turn Keyboard vibration on or off.

Tip: To adjust your Gboard settings, touch and hold the comma button or tap Settings .

Change emergency broadcast settings

You can turn alert types on or off, find past alerts, and control sound and vibration.

  1. On your phone, open the Settings app.
  2. Tap Notifications and then Wireless emergency alerts.
  3. Choose how often you want to receive alerts and which settings you want to turn on.
Choose other sounds & vibrations (touch, charging, screen lock & more)
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration And then Advanced.
  3. Turn a sound or vibration on or off.
Change work profile sounds
  1. Set up a work profile.
  2. Open your phone's Settings app.
  3. Tap Sound & vibration And then Advanced.
  4. Scroll down to "Work profile sounds."
  5. Choose your ringtones and sounds.
Turn on Adaptive Sound (Pixel 4a (5G) & later, including Fold)

Important: To use Adaptive Sound, check that you have the latest Android software. Learn how to check your Android version. Then, from the Play Store, check that you have the most recent version of the Device Personalization Services app.

Adaptive Sound subtly and automatically optimizes volume based on the noise level of your environment.

Adaptive Sound only works on your Pixel phone. It doesn’t work with sound played through external speakers or headphones. Adaptive Sound is on by default in Pixel 7 phones.

  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration and then Adaptive Sound.
  3. Turn Adaptive Sound on or off.
Turn on Clear Calling (Pixel 7 & later, including Fold)

Important: This feature depends on your call bandwidth and may not be available for all calls.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Sound & vibration and then Clear Calling.
  3. Turn Use Clear Calling on or off.

Have sound settings change with your routine

Important: To have settings change automatically when you're in a certain place or on a certain Wi-Fi network, you must set a rule.

Set a suggested rule
  1. Your Pixel phone can suggest rules based on your routine. To set a suggested rule, on a "Settings suggestion" notification, tap Set up a rule.
  2. Under "Add rule," tap the rule you want to add:
    • Set ringer to normal
    • Silence phone
    • Turn on Do Not Disturb
  3. Tap Add.
Make a custom rule
  1. Open your phone's Settings app.
  2. Tap System and then Rules and then Add rule and then Add Wi-Fi network or location.
  3. Under "Add rule," tap the rule you want to add:
    • Turn on Do Not Disturb
    • Set phone to silent
    • Set phone to vibrate
    • Set phone to ring
  4. Tap Add.
