You may want to help users find the information they are looking for, even if the words they use in their query aren't exactly the words used in your content. By setting up Query enhancement (synonyms), you can expand your users' queries with variations of a search term.
For example, you can define "assassin" as a synonym for "ninja." When a user searches for "ninja" with your search engine, they will also receive results for "assassin."
Programmable Search Engine supports a maximum of 2000 synonyms per search engine.
Add Synonyms:
- From the list of search engines, select the search engine you want to edit.
- Under Overview, scroll down to Search features. Click on "All search features settings"
- Scroll down to Query enhancement. Click Add.
- Enter the Search term you expect users to search for and one or more Synonyms that should be included in the results. Click Add.
- Click Save.
Note: Each Synonyms to expand must be added individually.
Add Keywords:
Keywords describe the content or subject of your search engine. These keywords are used to tune your search engine results. Learn more
- From the list of search engines, select the search engine you want to edit.
- Under Overview, scroll down to Search features. Click on "All search features settings"
- Scroll down to Query enhancement. Click "Add keywords" beside Keywords.
- Enter the keywords e.g. climate 'global warming' 'greenhouse gases'.
- Click Save.
Add Query addition:
Appends additional query parameters to the search.
- From the list of search engines, select the search engine you want to edit.
- Under Overview, scroll down to Search features. Click on "All search features settings"
- Scroll down to Query enhancement. Click "Add query addition" beside Query addition.
- Enter the additional query which will be added to your query.
- Click Save.
Add Web Search extra query terms:
Adds extra terms to the web search query using Logical OR.
- From the list of search engines, select the search engine you want to edit.
- Under Overview, scroll down to Search features. Click on "All search features settings"
- Scroll down to Query enhancement. Click "Add extra query terms" beside Web Search extra query terms.
- Enter the extra query terms which will be added to your query.
- Click Save.
