Add a Google Ads Performance Max campaigns to a Search Ads 360 portfolio bid strategy

Google Ads Performance Max campaigns are supported for Search Ads 360 portfolio optimization and reporting. Portfolio bid strategies automatically set bids for every auction to help you reach the performance goals you choose. One portfolio bid strategy can apply to many campaigns, so you can save time by managing your settings in a single location.

Before you begin

Step 1: Use Search Ads 360 conversions

Google Ads Performance Max uses machine learning models to optimize bids and placements to drive conversions or conversion value for your goals, but you provide important inputs about what types of conversions are most valuable to your business – like the conversion activities you’ve set up in Floodlight. By sharing these conversion activities with your Google Ads Performance Max campaign, Performance Max will automatically optimize Smart Bidding to prioritize those types of conversions.

Step 2: Create a portfolio bid strategy with auction-time bidding enabled

Google Ads Performance Max campaigns can only be added to portfolio bid strategies that use Google Ads auction-time bidding.

A Search Ads 360 bid or budget bid strategy using Google Ads auction-time bidding includes auction-time bids in its analysis to set each campaign's return on investment (ROI) target or budget at least once a day to achieve the strategy's target.

While creating your portfolio bid strategy, make sure the conversion goals and portfolio objectives match those of your Google Ads Performance Max campaign. For example, if your Google Ads Performance Max campaign is set to optimize towards conversion value, set your plan to optimize towards conversion value as well.

Add a Performance Max campaign to a portfolio bid strategy

You are required to turn on conversion-data sharing before you can use Google Ads auction-time bidding.
  1. Sign in to your Search Ads 360 experience.
  2. From the page menu on the left, click Campaigns.
  3. Click the checkbox for the campaign(s) you’d like to edit.
  4. Click Edit and choose Change bid strategy.
  5. Choose a currency for your edits.
  6. Choose Use existing portfolio strategy - select a strategy from the list provided.
  7. Click Apply.
Performance Max campaigns can only be added to portfolio bid strategies that use Google Ads auction-time bidding and Target CPA or ROAS bid strategies.
