Add, delete & organize pages

You can add or delete pages, insert a table of contents, edit headers and footers, and update site info settings in Google Sites.

Add a page

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. At the bottom right, hover over Add New page.
  4. Click New page Add.
  5. Enter the page name.
  6. Click Done.
  7. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Copy or delete a page

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. On the page you want to duplicate or delete, click More More.
  4. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Add a table of contents

You can add a table of contents to help viewers navigate your page structure. The table of contents automatically updates when you edit your page.

  1. On your computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click Insert and then Table of contents.
  3. Publish your site to use the table of contents. Learn how to publish your site.

Tip: To delete the table of contents, click the table and then Delete tile Remove.

Edit a table of contents

The table of contents automatically indents based on the structure of your titles, headings, and subheadings. To remove the indent:
  1. On your computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. Click on your table of contents.
  3. Click Flatten Decrease indent.

Tip: To re-indent, click Indent Increase indent.

Hide a heading from a table of contents

You can hide titles, headings, and subheadings from site viewers in your table of contents. 
  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. In your table of contents, point to the heading that you want to hide or unhide.
    • To hide the heading, click Hide Hide.
    • To unhide the heading, click Show Hide.
  3. In the top right, click Publish.

Tip: Your heading will still be visible when you edit your site, but it won't be visible on the published site.

Organize your pages

Move a page

You can move a page under another page to create a subpage.

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. Drag the page where you want to move it.
  4. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Create a new subpage

To create a new subpage, click Pages.Then, choose a page and click More More and then Add subpage.

Tip: You can create up to 5 levels of sub pages.

Choose your homepage

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. Choose a page and click More More and then Make home page.
  4. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Create a custom URL

You can create a custom path to a page on your site.

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. Choose a page and click More More and then Properties.
  4. Click Advanced and then Custom path and then enter the path you’d like to use.
  5. Click Done.

Tip:

  • Publishing a custom path to a page or renaming a page will create a new URL and might affect data tracking with Analytics.
  • If site viewers reject cookies for tracking usage, the data about your site's visits and activity might be inaccurate and underestimate actual usage. Learn more about cookies.

Add a link to your site menu

  1. On your computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. Click the page with the menu you want to update.
  4. At the right, point to Add Add.
  5. Click New link New link.
  6. Add a link name.
  7. Add a web address or choose a page from your site.
  8. Click Done.

Hide a page

When you hide a page, it won’t show up in the menu, but people can still get to it with a link.

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. On the page you want to hide, click More More and then Hide from navigation.
  4. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

You can’t hide the home page, but when you hide any other page:

  • Subpages are also hidden.
  • Other sites and pages can link to the page.

Nest pages inside a dropdown menu

  1. On your computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. Click the page with the menu you want to update.
  4. At the bottom right, hover over Add New page.
  5. Click New menu section .
  6. Add a menu section name.
  7. Click Done.
  8. You can drag and drop pages into your new menu.

Tip: When you preview your site, you can see your nested pages by hovering over the new menu.

Resolve errors with page path character limits

In new Google Sites, page paths are limited to 1024 characters. If you nest pages under other pages or inside menu sections, the paths for those nested pages will be longer.

To resolve any errors, you can:

  • Shorten page or menu section titles.
  • Shorten custom path names.
  • Reorganize pages to reduce nesting.

Add or edit headers & footers

The header and footer are the areas at the top and bottom of each page on your Google site.

Remove or add header

When you create a site or a page, it will have a header. To remove it:

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. Point to the header.
  3. At the left, click Delete Delete.

Tip: To re-add a header, at the top, point to "Enter site name" and click Add header.

Change header image

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. Point to the header and click Change image.
  3. Click Upload or Select image.
  4. Upload or choose an image and click Open or Select.
  5. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Change header size

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. Point to the header and click Header type.
  3. Choose a size for the header.
  4. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Add or change a footer

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. Point to the bottom of the page and click Add footer or Edit footer.
  3. Enter your text or make other edits.
    • To change the background, point at the highlighted box. At the left, click Background Background.
  4. When done, click anywhere else on the page.
  5. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

To hide a footer, point to the footer, and at the bottom left click Hide Hide.

Change your site info settings

Show or hide a page last updated time

  1. On your computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. In the top right corner, click Settings Settings.
  3. In the "Settings" window, go to Viewer tools.
  4. Turn “Show page last updated time” on or off.
  5. At the top right, click Publish.

Add a page

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top left, click Create  and then In classic Sites.
  3. Choose a template.
  4. Name the site.
  5. Under "Site location," choose where to put the page.
  6. At the top, click Create.

Copy a page

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. Click the page you want to copy.
  3. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Copy page.
  4. Name the page.
  5. Under "Select a location," choose where to put the page.
  6. Click Copy.

Delete, restore, or move a page

Delete a page

When you delete a page, you also delete its attachments, comments, and sub-pages.

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. Click the page you want to delete.
  3. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Delete page.
  4. Click Delete.

Restore a deleted page

If you deleted a page within the last 30 days, you can restore it.

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. On the left, click Deleted items.
  4. Select the page you want to restore and click Recover.

Move a page

  1. On a computer, open a site in new Google Sites.
  2. At the right, click Pages.
  3. Drag the page where you want to move it.
  4. To publish your changes, at the top right, click Publish.

Create or edit a template

Create a page template

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. On the left, click Page templates and then Create page template.
  4. Enter a template name and click Create.
  5. Make changes to the template, then click Save.

Tip: To create a template from a page on your site, at the top right, click More actions Settings and then Save as page template.

Create a site template

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. Click Publish this site as a template. If you don’t see this option, you can’t share your site as a template.
  4. Enter a template name and description.
  5. Click Submit.

Edit HTML to change how your page looks

You can edit the code of your page to create a custom page layout.

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. Choose the page you want to edit and click Edit page Edit.
  3. In the toolbar, click <HTML>.
  4. Make changes to the HTML code and click Update.

Change your homepage

  1. On a computer, open a site in classic Google Sites.
  2. At the top right, click More actions Settings and then Manage site.
  3. Under "Landing page," click Change.
  4. Pick the page you want to use and then click OK.
  5. At the top left, click Save.
