Manage repeating tasks in Google Tasks and Google Calendar

You can create, edit and delete repeating tasks in Google Tasks and Google Calendar.

Important:

  • A limited number of upcoming recurring tasks appear at one time on your Calendar grid. As time passes, new tasks appear automatically.
  • Shared tasks and subtasks can't be set to repeat.
  • Recurring tasks can't be moved to other task lists.
  • If you stop a series of tasks from repeating, you can't set it to repeat again. You must create a new series of repeating tasks.

Set tasks to repeat 

To set tasks to repeat from Google Tasks:

  1. Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive or a file in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides.
  2. On the right, click Tasks Tasks logo.
  3. Click an existing task or create a new task.
  4. To add a date and time, click Date/time.
  5. Next to 'Date/time', click Repeat .
  6. Under 'Repeats every', select day, week, month or year.
  7. Under 'Ends', select an option to create a recurring task:
    • With no end date, select Never.
    • With a specific end date, select On, then choose a date.
    • This ends after a certain number of occurrences. Select After, then select a number of occurrences.
  8. Click OK.

To set tasks to repeat from Google Calendar: 

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. On the calendar grid, click any empty space.
  3. Below the title, select Task.
  4. Below the date, click Does not repeat.
  5. Select an option:
    • Select a preset frequency, such as Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Annually. Click Save.
    • Select Custom, then set your preferred recurrence frequency or an end date. Click Done and then Save.

Edit or complete a recurring task

To edit or complete a recurring task from Google Tasks: 

  1. Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive or a file in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides.
  2. On the right, click Tasks Tasks logo.
  3. Click the task that you want to change.
    • To edit the date and time for all tasks in a series, at the bottom of the task, click the repetition info.
    • To change the date and time of the next repeating task in a series, click the date.
    • To stop a task from repeating, next to the repetition info, click Stop repeating  and then Stop repeating.  
    • To mark the task as complete, on the left of a task, click Complete Mark complete. At the bottom of the panel, under 'Completed', you can view your completed tasks. The next instance of your repeating task appears in your task list on the date specified.

To edit or complete a recurring task from Google Calendar:

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. Click a task that you want to change. 
  3. To edit, click Edit Edit.
  4. Select an option:
    • To edit the date or time, click Date/Time .
    • To edit how often a task occurs or to stop a task from repeating, click Repeat .
  5. Click Save.
  6. Choose between applying changes to 'This task' or 'All tasks'. 
  7. Click OK.
  8. To mark the task as complete, click Mark completed.

Delete tasks in a series  

To delete all tasks in a series from Google Tasks:

  1. Go to Gmail, Calendar, Chat, Drive or a file in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides.
  2. On the right, click Tasks Tasks logo.
  3. Next to the task that you want to delete, click Open menu More.
  4. Click Delete  and then Delete all.

To delete tasks in a series from Google Calendar: 

  1. Open Google Calendar.
  2. Click the task that you want to delete. 
  3. Click Delete .
  4. Select an option: 
    • This task
    • This and following tasks
    • All tasks
  5. Click OK.

Important: To delete a single task from a repeating series, you must use Google Calendar.
