Transcribe in Google Translate

The Translate app lets you translate in near real-time while someone speaks a different language. For example, you can translate a classroom lecture or speech.

Transcribe spoken words

Important: To use this feature, in your device settings, turn on microphone permissions for Google Translate.

  1. Open the Translate app Translate app.
  2. Tap Dictation Speak and then Transcribe Transcribe.
    • If the Dictation Speak button is unavailable, the spoken language can't be translated.
  3. At the top, select the speaker’s language.
  4. At the top, select the translation language.
    • Your phone automatically starts to translate spoken words.
  5. To toggle between the speaker’s language and the translation language, in the toolbar near the mic, tap Settings Settings and then Show original text.
  6. To stop or end a translation:
    • Stop: Tap the Blue mic Blue mic. Wait for it to turn to a White mic White mic.
    • End: Tap Back .
Tip: To change your font size, in the toolbar near the mic, tap Settings Settings.

Save your transcript

  1. After you’ve completed your transcription, at the top, tap Save transcript Add to phrasebook.
  2. To access your saved transcripts on the Home screen, at the top, tap Saved Add to phrasebook and then Transcripts.

Select, copy & share your transcripts

You can copy and share content when you transcribe spoken words.

  • Select text: In the transcript screen, touch, hold, and drag the text.
  • Select all text in transcript: Tap Select all.
  • Copy the selected text to your clipboard: Tap Copy.
  • Share text to other apps: Tap Share.
