You can stop receiving directions at any time while in navigation mode:
- Tap the ETA bar at the bottom of the screen
- Tap Stop

Tap to stop navigation
Android Automotive (AAOS)
Stop navigation on AAOS
Tap 
to stop navigation
CarPlay
Stop navigation on CarPlay
- Tap anywhere on the screen
- Tap Stop
