In a browser, like Chrome or Firefox, you can choose your preferred theme for Google Search. If you prefer a specific color scheme for Search pages, you can choose to always use a Light theme or Dark theme. Search pages include the Google homepage, search results page, and Search settings.
Choose a theme for Search pages
Important: By default, the color scheme for Search pages matches the color scheme of the device you’re on.
To change your preferred theme for Search, you can update your Search settings. Your theme choice saves on each desktop when you're signed in to your Google Account.
- On your computer, do a search on google.com.
- If you want the same Search settings across desktop browsers, sign in to your Google Account. At the top right, click Sign in.
- If you find your Profile picture or initial, you’re already signed in.
- At the top left, click Settings See all settings.
- On the left, click Appearance.
- Choose Device default, Dark theme, or Light theme.
- Device default: Automatically match the color scheme of your current device
- Dark theme: Light text on a dark background
- Light theme: Dark text on a light background
- At the bottom, click Save.
Choose a theme on mobile devices
Important: By default, the color scheme for Search pages matches the color scheme of the device you’re on.
- On your mobile device or tablet, do a search on google.com.
- If you want the same Search settings across mobile device browsers, sign in to your Google Account. At the top right, tap Sign in.
- If you find your Profile picture or initial, you’re already signed in.
- At the top left, tap More Settings .
- Under “Appearance,” choose Device default, Dark theme, or Light theme.
- Device default: Automatically match the color scheme of your current device
