Tips and resources for teens

Teens are an important part of the YouTube community. If you're a teen with your own Google Account, use the resources and tips below to stay safe on YouTube.

Safety tips

  • Know what type of content to film. When you film videos of your friends, classmates or other minors, remember that they should never be sexually suggestive, violent or dangerous.

  • Remember the 'Grandma Rule'. Is your video something that you'd want your grandparents, parents or future employer to watch? If not, it's probably not a great idea to post it. After you post a video, you never know who might view it. If the video gets copied or reposted, you can't remove every copy.

  • Prevent dangerous or uncomfortable situations. Don't post something just because someone else asked you to. Talk to a trusted adult before trying to meet up with an online friend.

  • Use our privacy features. YouTube has features to help you limit who can view the videos that you post. To help protect your privacy, you can set personal videos to 'private' or 'unlisted'. To manage your experience on YouTube, visit the Privacy and safety centre.

  • To read tips and watch videos that can help you feel safer on YouTube, take a look at the Creator Safety Centre.

Supervised experiences

For additional safety, you can set up a supervised experience and link with your parent's account. When linked, parents can get insight into your YouTube channel activity. These insights may spark in-the-moment learning opportunities and conversations about how to create safely on YouTube. Learn more about supervised experiences for teens.

If you experience harassment, threats, impersonation or bullying, report the channel. If you find inappropriate content, report it.
