Monetisation during Content ID disputes

Videos can earn money during a Content ID dispute if both the video creator and the Content ID claimant want to monetise the video. You can dispute a Content ID claim at any time. If you dispute a claim within five days, any revenue from the video will be held, starting with the first day that the claim was placed. If you dispute a Content ID claim after five days from the original claim date, we'll start holding revenue on the date that the dispute is made.

Throughout the dispute process, the revenue will be held separately and, once the dispute is resolved, we'll pay it out to the appropriate party.

Filing a Content ID dispute

After a Content ID claim is made on your video, you have a few options to respond:

  • Do nothing and let the claim remain on your video: After five days from the claim date, any held revenue is released to the claimant.
  • File a dispute within five days: Ads will continue to run. All revenue the video earns will be held while the claimant reviews your dispute.
  • File a dispute after five days: Revenue from the date that the dispute is made will be held while the claimant reviews your dispute.

Filing a Content ID appeal

If you choose to appeal a reinstated claim or to escalate to appeal, you have a few options:

  • Do nothing and let the claim remain on your video: After five days, any held revenue will be released to the claimant.
  • File an appeal within five days: Ads will continue to run. All revenue that the video earns will be held while the claimant reviews your appeal.
  • File an appeal after five days: Revenue from the date on which the appeal is made will be held while the claimant reviews your appeal.

Revenue from disputes in YouTube Analytics

If there is an active Content ID claim on your video and you dispute or appeal it, revenue data for the video won't be shown in YouTube Analytics. If the claim is released, revenue data for the dispute time period will be later added to YouTube Analytics. If the claim is resolved earlier in the month, this data should appear between the 10th and 20th of the next month. If the claim is resolved near the end of the month, the data may show up between the 10th and 20th two months later.

For example:
  • You disputed a Content ID claim on 12 July, and the dispute was resolved in your favour on 6 August. Your revenue data for 12 July to 6 August would show in Analytics between 10 and 20 September.
  • You disputed a Content ID claim on 4 August, and the dispute was resolved in your favour on 29 August. Your revenue data for 4 to 29 August would show in Analytics between 10 and 20 October.
If you have access to Downloadable reports in Content Manager, you'll find this info in your Adjustment Report.
You can choose not to monetise your video while it is in dispute, by turning off monetisation from the Videos page YouTube Studio.
