These features are only available to partners who use YouTube Studio Content Manager.
Reference overlaps happen when two reference files have segments that make claims on the same audio, visual, or audiovisual content.
The partner who uploaded the newest reference file will have a reference overlap requiring action in their Issues page in Studio Content Manager.
For Content ID to correctly claim content based on a reference with an overlap issue, the reference provider must choose to either:
- Exclude the overlapping segment from their reference
- Assert their ownership of the segment if they own exclusive rights to the content
Notes:
- You have 30 days to review and take action on reference overlaps with the Action required status.
- Only the reference provider can take action on reference overlaps.
- If the provider is no longer an owner of the asset, another owner can take action.
- If an asset has two or more owners, you may need to work with another owner to resolve the overlap.
Take action on an overlapping segment
- Sign in to Studio Content Manager.
- From the left menu, select Issues .
- Click the filter bar and select Issue type Reference overlap APPLY.
- Note: You can also get to this page directly from the Dashboard by clicking Reference overlaps in the Issues column.
- Click a reference overlap with an Action required status. A detail page opens to show more details about the overlapping segment, including ownership info.
- Click PLAY MATCH to play and compare the overlapping segments.
- Choose an action to take:
- NO, EXCLUDE OVERLAPS: Excludes the overlapping segment from the reference. This allows the other party to assert ownership of the segment.
- YES, ASSERT OWNERSHIP: Confirms you have exclusive rights to the overlapping segment. This prompts the other party to fix the reference overlap.
- Note: If you choose this option, the owner of the other reference will get a notification on their Issues page. The owner can also exclude the overlapping segment or counter-assert exclusive rights over the segment.
To get in touch with the other owner, click the email icon next to the other party's asset. If a reference overlap is counter-asserted, you can no longer assert exclusive rights.
Take action on multiple overlapping segments
- From the Issues page, click the checkboxes next to the reference overlaps you want to take the same action on.
- In the top banner, choose an action:
- ASSERT REFERENCE OVERLAP: Confirms you have exclusive rights to the reference overlaps you selected. This prompts the other parties to fix the reference overlaps.
- EXCLUDE REFERENCE OVERLAP: Excludes the reference overlaps from their reference files. This allows the other parties to assert ownership of the segments.
Until the reference overlap is resolved, any claims based on the overlapping segment will remain with the partner who delivered the content first. Once the reference overlap is resolved, claims are applied to the reference that has the final asserted ownership.
Manage reference overlaps
To manage your reference overlaps from your Issues page, you can:
- Click column headers to sort by expiry, title, date created, views, number of claimed videos, or overlapping duration.
- Click the filter bar and select Asset creation dates, Other party, or other relevant filters to refine your list.
- Click Status to view reference overlaps in different stages:
- Action required: Reference overlaps that require your review. You can choose to assert your ownership or exclude the overlapping segments.
- Waiting on: Reference overlaps that you have asserted ownership on and are now waiting on the owner of the other reference to take action.
- Resolved: Reference overlaps that have been resolved. The Status details column shows whether an overlapping segment was:
- Excluded: The segment was excluded from your reference and the overlap was resolved in favor of the other party.
- Excluded (Expired): The segment was excluded from your reference and the overlap was resolved in favor of the other party. The overlap was resolved when it expired.
- Owned (manual): The segment is owned by you and the overlap was resolved in your favor. The overlap was resolved manually with an action taken by you or the other party.
- Owned (expired): The segment is owned by you and the overlap was resolved in your favor. The overlap was resolved when it expired.
