Understand chat migration reports

Migrating chat messages from Teams using the new data migration service is currently in beta and subject to the Pre-General Availability Offerings Terms in the Google Workspace Service Specific Terms.

If you migrate users' chat messages with chat migration for the new data migration service, you can access 2 migration reports. The 2 types of reports are a summary report and a migration report.

Export the reports

After you run a chat migration, you can download the 2 reports in the Google Admin console of your target account.

You must be signed in as a super administrator for this task.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using an account with super administrator privileges (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. In the Admin console, go to Menu and then Dataand thenData import & exportand thenData migration (New).
  3. To export the reports to Google Sheets, click Export migration report or Export summary report.

    If the amount of data in the report exceeds the limit allowed in Sheets, the report is downloaded as a comma-separated values (CSV) file.

  4. If the Tasks list doesn't open automatically with the downloaded report, click Tasks .
  5. For Your Tasks, click the link to open the file in Sheets.

Understand the summary report

The summary report provides a count of the number of messages that migrated or failed to migrate for each channel.

Summary report field Description
Team ID The ID of the team.
Channel ID The ID of the channel.
Space ID The ID of the new Space. Spaces that weren't created are listed in the migration report.
Migration status Status of the chat migration:
  • Completed—All messages migrated successfully.
  • Running—Migration is still in progress.
  • Partial—Some messages didn't migrate successfully. To troubleshoot the messages that didn't migrate, check the migration report.
  • Failed—Messages didn't migrate and the new space wasn't created.
Messages migrated Number of messages that migrated successfully.
Messages failed Number of messages that failed to migrate. To troubleshoot, check the migration report.

Messages skipped

Number of messages that were skipped and not migrated.

Interpret the migration report

Use the migration report to identify messages that didn't migrate and the reasons for the failure.

Error report field Description
Status The migration status of the item (skipped, warning, error, success).
Error/warning code & description The code and message associated with the error or warning status.

Processing start time Start time of the migration of the item.
Processing end time End time of the migration of the item.
Source type The source item (such as, team, channel, channel metadata, channel memberships, or message).
Source identifier ID of the source item.
Source URI URI of the source item.
Target type The target item (such as, space, space metadata, space memberships, or message).
Target identifier ID of the item being migrated to the target account.
Target URI URI of the target item.

Resolve common error messages

If you get an error that's not mentioned in this table, try running a delta migration.

Error message Description & troubleshooting help
An error occurred while calling source side Verify that the Microsoft administrator account has the Global Administrator role. If it does, try running a delta migration.
An error occurred while calling target side Verify the following points are correct:
Internal error occurred You might get this error if the original message on the source account was:
  • Deleted
  • From a bot or contained unsupported message content

You might also get this error if the users specified in the Destination Email column of your identity map don't have a user account on the target domain. Correct the map and retry. For details, go to Create & upload an identity map

Found entries missing in the identity mapping for <username> A source user is not mapped to a target user in the identity map. Correct the map and retry. For details, go to Create & upload an identity map.
Task Failed - FAILED_PRECONDITION
  1. In the Google Admin console, turn on the Chat service for your organization. For details, go to Turn a service on or off for Google Workspace users.
  2. Run delta migration.
Task Failed - Email Not Found Make sure that the users specified in the error are listed in your Google Workspace domain's Directory. For details, go to Set up and manage the Directory.
Can't find [email address] in your Workspace account

Verify the following issues:

  • The user is active and not deleted in your Google Workspace account.
  • The user's email address is correctly entered in the identity map. 
Something went wrong. Try again An internal error. Try running the migration again.
