What's migrated in a file migration?

File migration copies files and other related data from your Microsoft OneDrive business editions to your organizations’ Google Workspace users’ My Drive accounts. File migration doesn’t delete or modify existing Google Workspace or OneDrive files or folders, but not all features in OneDrive are supported. Review the table below for details.

Anyone links

An item in OneDrive can have multiple sharable Anyone links.

Anyone with the link links

An item in Google Workspace can only have one sharable link labeled Anyone with the link. When multiple links to the same item are migrated, we use the most restrictive sharing setting.

For example, if a OneDrive link is shared with Writer and Reader permissions, the link will migrate to Google Workspace with Viewer permission.

Domain-based link permission

In the case of multiple links, Google Workspace uses the most restrictive sharing setting.

For example, if a OneDrive link is shared with Writer and Reader permissions, the link will migrate to Google Workspace with Viewer permission.

People you choose links

Added as direct user permission with the highest role selected in case of multiple links on a user or group.

External user permissions OneDrive folders or files that are shared with external users are shared with the same users in Google Workspace. External users will also receive email notifications when new files or folders are shared with them.

External users do not have to be included in the identity map.

What's not migrated?

  • Files and folders with Restricted permissions. Learn more
  • Files and folders with Blocked Download policies in Microsoft OneDrive.
  • Files and folders created by external users
  • Versions and metadata of files or folders that were last modified by external users
  • Previous versions of files (only the latest version of a file is migrated)
  • Permissions for internal users and groups that aren’t present in your Identity map
  • Custom permission roles (these are migrated as standard roles)
  • OneDrive Personal Vault files
  • OneDrive Favorites
  • OneDrive folder shortcuts
  • OneDrive folder colors
  • OneDrive document expiration dates

Migrating to a shared drive is not supported, and the same data cannot be migrated to multiple accounts within the same migration. The data migration tool does not support one-to-many identity mapping.
