Google is adding the Gemini app with enterprise-grade data protection as a core service to Google Workspace for Education Standard and Education Plus editions.
Previously, access to the Gemini app with enterprise-grade data protection required a Gemini for Google Workspace license. With this change, when chatting with the Gemini app, Education Standard and Education Plus users will be covered under their existing Google Workspace for Education agreements and will receive the same technical support as other Workspace services. Education Fundamentals users without a Gemini for Workspace license will continue to be able to chat with the Gemini app with added data protection as an additional service.
Additionally, Google is adding Google Vids as a core service to Education Plus and to Gemini for Google Workspace.
These changes will go into effect by the end of December 2024.

What is the Gemini app?
The Gemini app is the standalone chat experience available at gemini.google.com. When this rollout is complete, there will be three versions of the Gemini app for Google Workspace for Education customers:
- Gemini app with added data protection as an additional Google service. This free-of-charge tier will remain available to Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals users. Users who access Gemini as an additional service are subject to the Google Terms of service with added data protection. Their chats and uploaded files won't be reviewed by human reviewers or otherwise used to improve generative AI model.
- Gemini app with enterprise-grade data protection as a core service. This new tier is being added to Google Workspace Education Standard and Education Plus. Users who access Gemini as a core service are subject to the Google Workspace for Education Terms of service. Their chats and uploaded files won't be reviewed by human reviewers or otherwise used to improve generative AI model.
- Gemini Advanced as a core service. Users with a Gemini for Google Workspace license will continue to get access to Gemini Advanced, which includes everything in the Gemini app, plus access to Google’s most capable models and priority access to new features, like the ability to upload and analyze files, use Gems, and more. What is Google Vids
Google Vids is a collaborative video creation app in Google Workspace that makes it easy for students and educators to create engaging videos.
Previously, it was part of the Gemini for Google Workspace Alpha program and the Google for Education pilot program. It will soon be available in Google Workspace Education Plus and to users with Gemini for Google Workspace licenses.
Users with a Gemini for Google Workspace license will have access to AI-powered features in Google Vids like Help me create, Generate a voiceover, Remove image backgrounds, Generate an image, and Recording studio read-along teleprompter.
Google Vids will be on by default and can be disabled at the organizational level. However, if Google Docs are turned off in your domain, Vids access will be unavailable. Learn more about turning Vids on or off for users.
