What's migrated with GWMME?

Google Workspace Migration for Microsoft Exchange

You can use Google Workspace Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GWMME) to migrate email, calendar, and contact data from Microsoft Exchange, an IMAP server, or a PST file to your Google Workspace account. When you set up a migration to Google Workspace with GWMME, consider the following data and whether it's migrated.

Email  |  Calendar  |  Contacts  |  Other unsupported data

Email

Supported email data Notes & monitoring points
Email messages All email messages in top-level folders migrate. A top-level folder is a folder that's at the same level as your inbox folder.

You can also choose to migrate email to Google Vault.

Email state, such as read or unread
Deleted items Migration is optional. Deleted items are labeled Trash in Gmail.
Folders Folders map to labels in Gmail. You can exclude specific top-level folders from a migration by individually selecting them. If you exclude a folder, its subfolders are also excluded. For details, go to Chapter 6 of the GWMME Admin Guide.

Folders with folder paths longer than 225 characters do not migrate. The messages inside the folders also do not migrate.

Junk email Migration is optional. Junk email is labeled Spam in Gmail.
Public folders You can migrate content from public folders to Google Groups. For details, go to Migrate from public folders.
Large messages & attachments Most attachments migrate. Exceptions include a message plus attachment that's larger than 25 MB or certain types of file attachments, such as executable files. For details, go to File types blocked in Gmail.
Message flags Flags appear as stars in Gmail.
Shared mailboxes Shared mailboxes migrate as regular mailboxes. You can turn on Gmail delegation after the migration. For details, go to Let users delegate access to a Gmail account.
Subfolders How a subfolder migrates depends on its location:
  • Subfolder in a default folder—If the subfolder is under an Exchange mailbox default folder, such as Sent Items, Drafts, or Deleted Items, the subfolder doesn't migrate as a nested label. Instead, it's nested under the default folder name preceded by an underscore, for example, _Inbox/Financial.
  • Subfolder under other folders—Migrates in a nested state, for example, Financial/Q1 Invoices.

Unsupported email data

  • Posts in mailbox folders.
  • Importance levels of messages.
  • Rules—Both server and client rules don’t migrate, but you can create equivalent filters in Gmail.
  • Signatures—You can re-create signatures in Gmail.
  • Category definitions or assignments.

Calendar

Supported calendar data Notes & monitoring points
Default calendar, including events, descriptions, attendees, event reminders & locations If you're using an exported or archived PST file, all calendars migrate as Other calendars instead of as the default calendar. You can avoid this by using an Exchange server migration for importing calendars. For details, go to Migrate data from Exchange.
Calendar events If you import events for users who aren't the original organizer or initial attendee of the event, a warning message appears in the log file. However, the event successfully migrates and the target user is shown as an attendee of the event in Google Calendar.
Other calendars Other calendars migrate for the owner but not for other users who have access.
Free or busy status
Calendar resources Use a comma-separated values (CSV) file to migrate calendar resources, such as meeting rooms. You can also use the file to change event attendees' email addresses to Gmail email addresses. For details, go to Create CSV files for your migration.

Unsupported calendar data

  • Rich content in event descriptions—Rich text descriptions aren't imported. In Microsoft Outlook 2016, descriptions are converted to plain text.
  • Tentative, Out of Office, or any special status.
  • Calendar attachments.
  • Category definitions or assignments.
  • Video and audio conferencing links in events.

Contacts

Supported contacts data Notes & monitoring points
Personal contacts Migrates all fields.
Notes Notes in contacts migrate as plain text. Notes larger than 16 KB are truncated.

Unsupported contacts data

  • Contact folders—Contacts from all folders migrate but not into their separate folders. You can reorganize them using labels.
  • Contact groups or personal distribution lists—To send an email to a list of Google Workspace users, you can create a group in the Google Admin console.
  • Global domain contacts—Domain contacts appear in the Global Address List (GAL) in Microsoft Active Directory. To import these contacts, you must use a different product. For details, go to About Google Cloud Directory Sync .
