To make sure source information is correctly mapped to your new Google Workspace account using Google Workspace Migration for Microsoft Exchange (GWMME), use comma-separated values (CSV) files.
About the CSV files
There are 2 types of files—whether you use one or both depends on what you want to migrate.
- Control CSV file—Specifies the source users that get migrated and the new Google Workspace accounts their data is migrated to.
- Mapping CSV file—Transfers identities (such as users or calendar resources) on your source account to your target account. It ensures metadata and usernames are correctly transferred.
If you're migrating calendar data and one of the following is true, then you must use a mapping CSV file:
- A user's source email address differs from the target account address.
- Users with differing email addresses are invitees in calendar events that you're migrating.
Format guidelines for files
- Put each entry on a separate row
- Don't include header rows
- Delete any automatically added quotation marks
- Don't add more than 1,000 users and calendar resources to a single file
If you plan to use multiple client machines, make a separate CSV file for each client. Each CSV file must contain a unique set of users and calendar resources.
Format the files
Expand section | Collapse all & go to top
Format the control CSV fileUse the following format:
- For users–Source user,Target user
This format has some exceptions. For details, go to Examples of control CSV files.
- For calendar events and resources–Source resource address,Target resource address
For details, go to Where do I find a calendar resource email address?
Migrating from Exchange servers
You don't need to enter your users' passwords in the CSV file because authentication occurs through your Exchange server administrator account.
Use the following format:
- Source user,Target user
Example: [email protected],[email protected]
- If the email addresses are identical, you can exclude Target user.
Example: [email protected]
Google Workspace IMAP migrations
If you're migrating data from a personal Gmail account (@gmail.com account) go to Gmail migrations (below, in this section).
Use the following format:
- Source user,Target user
Example: [email protected],[email protected]
Cyrus or Mirapoint IMAP migrations
Use the following format:
- Source user,Target user
Example: [email protected],[email protected]
For details about migrating from Cyrus IMAP servers, go to "Special instructions for Cyrus IMAP" in chapter 6 of the GWMME Administration Guide.
Exchange IMAP migrations
For Exchange IMAP migrations (not regular Exchange migrations), use the following format:
- Windows AD domain/Exchange admin/Source user#Admin password,Target user
Example: solarmora/admin/[email protected]#VjJ8zTsm,[email protected]
In this example, the Microsoft Windows Active Directory domain is solarmora, the Exchange administrator's username is admin, and their password is VjJ8zTsm. The administrator is migrating email for the user [email protected].
Gmail migrations
Use the following format:
- Source user#Source user password,Target user
Example: [email protected]#VjJ8zTsm,[email protected]
For more information about the source user password, go to Create a CSV file of users & passwords.
Other IMAP servers migrations
When you're using an IMAP server other than Google Workspace, Cyrus, Mirapoint, or Exchange, use the following format:
- Source user#Source user password,Target user
Example: [email protected]#fKz47MCb,[email protected]
- For source user, provide the username that the user enters in their IMAP email client to check their email. Some IMAP servers only require a username (for example, dcruz), and others require the full email address (for example, [email protected]). If you’re uncertain, use the full email address.
PST files migrations
If you're migrating data using Personal Storage Table (PST) files, use the following format:
- PST folder name,Target user
Example: pst-archive,[email protected]
Important: Include all user accounts and calendar resources in the file—even if some aren’t currently being migrated.
Use the following format:
- Users: Source user,Target user
Example: [email protected],[email protected]
- If the email addresses are identical, you can exclude Target user
Example: [email protected]
- Calendar events: Source resource address,Target resource address
For details, see the following section.
