Messages sent to your domain are generally delivered to the intended recipients, but also might be rejected, rerouted, whitelisted, or quarantined based on the configuration of your custom Gmail settings. These settings can sometimes override Gmail's spam filter, which determines whether a message is marked as clean or spam.
The Custom settings report allows you to view the number of messages in your domain affected by a disagreement between your spam filters and custom Gmail settings.
Note: The security dashboard also includes a summary of custom settings data. For details, see Security dashboard.
View the custom settings report
-
Sign in to your Google Admin console.
Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).
-
In the Admin console, go to Menu SecuritySecurity centerDashboard.
- In the lower-right corner of the Custom settings panel, click View Report.
Custom settings graph
This graph shows messages broken down by All and Disagree:
- All--Number of messages whose consequence was determined by your custom Gmail settings
- Disagree--Number of messages where your domain's Gmail configuration and Gmail's spam filter disagree on the consequence
Note: You can hide lines in the graph by clicking on the legend. For example, click Disagree to hide this line in the graph. This is especially useful if one line overlaps another.
Using the drop-down menus above the graph, you can customize the graph to provide details only about certain types of messages:
Filter | Description |
---|---|
Traffic source: All, External or Internal |
External—Include only messages sent by users outside of your domain Internal—Include only messages sent by users inside of your domain |
Consequence: All, Quarantine, Reject, or Whitelist | Quarantine—Include only suspicious messages that are sent to an administrator quarantine Reject—Include only messages that are rejected before reaching the intended recipient Whitelist—Include only messages delivered from IP addresses or domains that are considered legitimate sources |
Domain | Choose the domain for your report. |
Date range |
Customize the report to view data from Today, Yesterday, This week, Last week, This month, Last month, or Days ago (up to 180 days); or enter a Start date and End date. Click Apply after you set the date range. Note: For this report, data is displayed only for the last 31 days. For example, if you set the parameters for up to 60 days, the data in the report is cut off at 31 days. |
To generate a spreadsheet with the graph’s data, click Export Sheet. A spreadsheet corresponding to the custom-settings data in the graph will be generated and saved to your My Drive folder.
Compare current and historical data
To compare the current data to historical data, in the top right, from the Statistical analysis menu, select Percentile (not available for all Security dashboard charts). You’ll see an overlay on the chart to show the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentile of historical data (180 days for most data and 30 days for Gmail data). Then, to change the analysis, at the top right of the chart, use the menu to change the overlay line.
Custom settings table
You can learn which custom Gmail rules disagreed with the Google spam filters by clicking any data point in the graph.
For example, by clicking the data point on August 21 in the graph’s Disagree line, a table is displayed that lists the top rules that led to a disagreement on that date.
The table includes three tabs: CLEAN, SPAM, and PHISHING:
- CLEAN tab—Includes only messages that were placed in users’ inboxes (this includes suspicious messages that were placed in users’ inboxes due to whitelisting). This tab is opened by default.
- SPAM and PHISHING tabs—Include only messages that were placed in the spam folder (this includes messages identified as spam or phishing by the Gmail spam filter).
Within each tab, the table is organized by Custom rule name, Custom rule type, and disagreement message count.
- Custom rule name—Provides the name of the custom rule
- Custom rule type—Describes the type of custom Gmail setting that resulted in a disagreement with the Gmail spam filter
