Change your video background
You can use this feature only if your organization supports it. For help, contact your administrator.
To help limit distractions or make video meetings more fun, you can now blur or replace your background or replace it with an image, an immersive background, or a video. You can also apply styles to customize your video with various light, color filters and stylized backgrounds.
- Go to Google Meet select a meeting.
- On the bottom right of your self view, click Apply visual effects .
- To completely blur your background, click Blur your background .
- To slightly blur your background, click Slightly blur your background .
- To select a pre-uploaded background, click a background.
- To upload your own image for your background, click Upload a background image .
- To add a style to your video, click a style.
- To select a filter, at the bottom, tap Filters the filter you want to use.
- Tip: If the filter is interactive, follow the directions on the screen to activate it.
- Click Join Now.
Adjust your camera, microphone, or speaker settings
You can adjust your camera and microphone in Meet so others can hear you and see your video better.
Change your camera settings
- On your computer, open meet.google.com.
- Join a video meeting.
- Before you join or during the meeting, click More Settings .
- On the left, click Video Camera.
- Select a setting.
- At the top right, click Close .
Change your speakers and microphone settings
- On your computer, open meet.google.com.
- Join a video meeting.
- Before you join or during the meeting, click More Settings .
- On the left, click Audio the setting you want to change:
- Microphone
- Speakers
- Optional: To test your speakers, click Test.
- At the top right, click Close .
Filter out background noise
To help limit distractions in your video meeting, noise cancellation in Meet can remove background noises such as typing, closing a door, or the sounds of a nearby construction site.
Turn on noise cancellation before a meeting
- Go to meet.google.com select a meeting.
- Before you join, on the top right, click More options Settings .
- Click Audio .
- Turn on Noise cancellation.
- Click Join now.

Availability depends on your device and Google Workspace edition.
Use a phone to improve your audio
If you’re in a video meeting and the network connection is poor, you can dial in from your phone. Or, if your computer’s microphone and speaker aren’t working, you can use your phone for audio. To speak and listen using your phone while still viewing the video meeting on your computer, you can have Meet call your phone or dial in from your device.
Have Meet call your phone
From within a dial-out supported country, you can use Meet to call US or Canadian phone numbers. If your organization turns on Meet Global Dialing, you can use Meet to call more international numbers.- Choose an option:
- If you’re in the meeting, click More Use a phone for audio.
- If you’re in the green room of a meeting, on the right, click Join and use a phone for audio.
- Tip: If you’re in a different domain than the meeting owner, someone in the meeting might need to approve you.
- Enter your phone number.
- Tip: To save your number for future meetings, check the Remember the phone number on this device box.
- Click Call me.
- When prompted, press 1 on your phone.
Dial in by phone
Tip: An administrator needs to turn on dial-in by phone. Go to the supported countries and regions.
If you’re in a different domain than the meeting owner and aren’t invited to the Google Calendar event, you must join the meeting. Then, someone might need to approve you.

- Choose an option:
- If you’re in the meeting, click More Use a phone for audio.
- If you’re in the green room of a meeting, on the right, click Join and use a phone for audio Dial in.
- Tip: If you’re in a different domain than the meeting owner, someone in the meeting might need to approve you.
- Dial the number shown. Once connected, enter the pin followed by the # key.
- When prompted, press 1 on your phone.
Turn on captions during a meeting
You can turn captions on to view subtitles as everyone speaks during a video meeting. When you turn on captions, they will be visible on that particular device. In order for other participants in the meeting to see captions, they’ll have to turn it on for their devices as well.

- On your computer, go to Google Meet.
- Join a meeting.
- At the bottom, click Turn on captions or Turn off captions .
Change the language
- At the bottom of the meeting screen, click Menu Captions .
- Choose a language Apply.
Restrict audio or video
Mute a participant's microphone
If there is feedback or background noise in a video meeting, you may want to mute other participant’s microphones. You can mute one person's microphone. Or for a large meeting you organize, you can mute everyone's microphone. Participants who want to speak can then unmute themselves after they’ve been muted.

- Point to a person’s image > click Mute .
- At the bottom right, click People .
- Next to a participant's name, click Mute .
Mute all participants' microphones
As a meeting host or co-host, you can lock all participants’ audio so they're muted. Once you turn off Audio Lock, everyone can unmute their devices. Audio Lock doesn't apply to you or other meeting co-hosts. You can only set Audio Lock from your computer or iOS device, but lock settings apply to all devices.
- During the meeting, from the bottom right, click Host Controls .
- From the side panel that opens, toggle Turn on their microphone on or off.
Tip: After you turn off Audio Lock, participants must manually turn on their microphones.
Turn off all participants' cameras
As a meeting host or co-host, you can turn off all participants' cameras so no one can display their video feed. Instead, only their profile picture appears. When you remove the video lock, everyone can show their video feed. Video Lock doesn’t apply to you or other meeting co-hosts. You can only set Video Lock from your computer or iOS device, but lock settings apply to all devices.
Once a participants' video is locked, they can't present or share their screen. If they need to share their screen, you must promote them to co-host.
- During the meeting, from the bottom right, click Host Controls .
- From the side panel that opens, toggle Turn on their video on or off.
