Write a quick first draft

You can use this feature only if your organization supports it. For help, contact your administrator.

For many of us, getting started—putting those first few words on a blank page—is a challenge. This guide explains how to get past the blank page and write a first draft quickly using Gemini for Google Workspace in Gmail and Google Docs.

Before you use Gemini for Google Workspace

Gemini for Google Workspace is available when your Google account language is set to an English dialect. Additionally, some features are available in Spanish and Portuguese. Learn more about language availability.

 Write a quick first draft in Docs

Use Gemini for Google Workspace to write a quick first draft. 

Step 1. Open Help me write in Docs 

  1. On your computer, open a Google Docs file.
  2. In the document, click where you want to write.
  3. On the left, click Help me write .

 

Step 2. Tell Gemini what you want to write

  1. Enter a prompt that contains your instructions. For example:

    Write an outline of [project x]. Specify 4 phases: Research, Design, Testing, and Production. The project will kick off Q2 this year and wrap up in Q2 next year.
     
  2. Click Create

Step 3. Review, refine & insert the response

  1. Review the response.
  2. Click Refine then choose how you want Gemini to change the content.
  3. When you're finished, click Insert.

Important: If you recently joined Workspace Labs, you may not have access to this feature on mobile yet. Try using this feature on your computer.

Write a new draft with Gemini in Gmail

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose.
    • You can also reply to an email thread.
  3. At the top right of the window, tap Help me write .
  4. Enter a prompt. For example:
    • "A thank you letter for my job interview"
    • "A birthday invitation for my 5-year-old"
    • "Ask my friend for restaurant recommendations in Toronto"
  5. Tap Create.
  6. (Optional) To generate another draft, tap Recreate . After you create a new version of the draft, you can’t go back to the previous version.
    • To edit the draft: Tap the generated text and make your changes.
  7. If your draft looks good, tap Insert.

Tips:

  • For better results, include:
    • Recipient
    • Topic
    • Tone you want to express in your prompt

For example, "An apology to my child's teacher for their absence."

  • To get a draft you like, it may take a few tries. To submit a different prompt:
    1. At the top right of the draft, tap Close .
    2. Enter a new prompt.

Refine a draft with Gemini in Gmail

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open the Gmail app .
  2. At the bottom right, tap Compose.
    • You can also reply to an email thread or open an existing draft.
  3. Write an email draft.
  4. At the top right of the window, tap Help me write .
  5. Choose an option from the menu:
    • Polish: Refine your draft.
    • Formalize: Make the draft more formal.
    • Elaborate: Add additional details to the draft.
    • Shorten: Shorten the draft.
  6. (Optional) To generate another draft, tap Recreate . After you create a new version of the draft, you can’t go back to the previous version.
    • To edit the draft: Tap the generated text and make your changes.
  7. To accept the new draft, tap Replace.

Give feedback about a draft

Gemini for Google Workspace is constantly learning and may not be able to support your request.

If the generated draft is inaccurate or looks unsafe, you can let us know by submitting feedback. Your feedback can help improve AI-assisted Workspace features and broader Google efforts in AI.

  • Below the generated text, tap Good suggestion or Bad suggestion .
  • After you tap Bad suggestion , tap Get started.
    1. Select a feedback option in the menu, then enter your comments.
    2. Tap Submit .
    3. To allow Google to email you for more information or updates, tap Yes.
