Ad Exchange ads for video and games

Integration with Ad Exchange allows you to earn money from your video content and in games.

Eligibility requirements

To serve video ads with Ad Exchange, you must adhere to the Google Ad Manager Partner Guidelines, as well as the following:

  • The requested ad must play on video content, or in games where supported
  • Content must be family safe and targeted to users age 13 and older
  • You must own monetization rights for the content, or have explicit, written permission from the owner

Additionally, video inventory that contains content restricted in the Video inventory restrictions may receive less advertising than other, non-restricted content.

Ad Exchange supports HTML5 video players for web, as well as iOS and Android on mobile apps. It can be used with direct IMA SDK integration.

Video ad types

Ad Exchange supports the following video ad types:

Type Description
Standard in-stream A video ad of fixed duration.
TrueView + skippable in‑stream

A proprietary Google video ad that after a fixed period of time offers the user the ability to skip to your content. This format provides users with control over which advertisers' messages they want to see. On Ad Exchange, you receive the same revenue for an impression whether or not the viewer skips the ad.

Learn the differences between skippable and TrueView.

Video click-to-download A video interstitial ad that provides a way for advertisers to increase app downloads. Click-to-download ads are skippable.
Bumper A short video ad that plays before or after an ad slot during video content; usually the bumper is a house ad or a promotion of the video content.
VPAID (Video Player Ad Interface Definition) An industry-standard protocol for supporting advanced video ads offering interactive functionality such as social sharing buttons or in-ad navigation menus.
VPAID skippable A variant of the VPAID standard that supports skippable videos.
Display & Video 360 A video ad bought using Display & Video 360.
Native content An ad whose look is controlled by publishers based on trafficker-defined values to a set of variables (for example, headline, image, body, app icon, call-to-action). Ad Manager uses the assigned values for the content of native ads.
Native app install An ad intended to promote and drive installs or take another action on mobile apps and mobile web. Their look is controlled by publishers, in the same way as a native content ad.

Ad Exchange ads in game content support standard in-stream video, TrueView + skippable in-stream, and VPAID.

Integration options

Integration options are listed in the order in which they are recommended.

  1. Dynamic allocation
Use this option if you use Ad Manager Video Solutions for video ad serving.
  2. Partner platform integration
Use this option if you use a third-party video player or video ad server that has partnered with Google. See the list of partner platforms that have integrated support for Ad Exchange.
  3. Direct integration
You can use this option if you own the source code of your video player.
  4. VPAID adapter integration
You can use this option if you cannot use any of the preceding integration methods and if your video player supports VAST version 2.0, or higher, and VPAID version 1.0, or higher. This method will incur slightly higher latency as it requires more communication between the video player and the ad server.
