[GA4] Expanded data sets for Google Analytics 360

This feature is only available for Google Analytics 360 properties.

Expanded data sets in Google Analytics 360 enable you to trigger the expansion of the (other) row in a report or exploration to up to 2 million rows of data. Expanded data sets are available for both default and custom reports for Google Analytics 360 properties. Expanded data sets can also be queried using the Google Analytics API or Looker Studio.

In this article:

Limits and caveats

  • Expanded data sets are only available for Google Analytics 360 properties.
  • You can create a maximum of 100 expanded data sets per Google Analytics 4 360 property. If you're nearing this limit, you can delete any existing expanded data sets that you're no longer using.

You should only use expanded data sets when you need detailed data in a report on an on-going basis.

For one-off reporting needs, you can use unsampled explorations.
  • The Advertising reports aren't currently eligible for expanded data.
  • Your report can't include more than 6 dimensions or 12 metrics. This includes dimensions that are used in filters and comparisons.
  • If the expanded data you request still exceeds 2 million rows, your report can still include an (other) row. As a best practice, only include necessary dimensions in reports. Note: Additional metrics do not affect the (other) row.
  • If you archive a custom dimension, you have the option to delete any expanded data sets that include that dimension. Learn more about archiving
  • From the time you request expanded data in a report, it will take 48 hours for data to move out of the (other) row. After 48 hours, that report will have expanded data going forward.

Request an expanded data set

To request an expanded data set, you need the Editor or Administrator role on the property. Contact your Google Analytics administrator if you have questions about your permission level.

  1. In your Analytics account, go to an eligible report that includes an (other) row.
  2. Select your desired primary and/or secondary dimensions and apply any filters or comparisons.
  3. Click the data quality icon at the top of the report.
  4. Click Expand this data.
  5. In the Expanded data details page, enter a name and description.
  6. Click Create.
Note: It will take 48 hours from the time of your request for the expanded data to show in a report. Google Analytics provides a report with 52 days of expanded data from before the date when the request was made, as well as new data moving forward.

See expanded data set configurations

To see a list of the expanded data sets for your property, you need the Editor or Administrator role on the property.

  1. In Admin, under Property column, select Expanded data sets.
Note: The previous link opens to the last Analytics property you accessed. You can change the property using the property selector. You must be an Editor or above at the property level to see expanded data set configurations.
  2. Make sure that you have the desired account and property selected.

On the Expanded data sets page, you'll see a table with rows for each of your requested expanded data sets. The table shows the name, date of creation, first time available, and description of each data set.

If you want to see how close you are to the limit of 100 expanded data sets, click Quota information at the top of the table.

Click a row to open up the Expanded data details page for each data set. You can see which dimensions, metrics, and filters the data set includes.

Delete an expanded data set

To delete an expanded data set, you need the Editor or Administrator role on the property.

  1. In Admin, make sure that you have the desired account and property selected.
Note: The previous link opens to the last Analytics property you accessed. You can change the property using the property selector. You must be an Editor or above at the property level to delete an expanded data set.
  2. In the Property column, select Expanded data sets.
  3. Click the row that contains the expanded data set you want to delete.
  4. On the Expanded data details page, click the Delete button at the top of the page.
  5. In the confirmation pop-up, click Delete.

Unsupported dimensions, metrics, and reports

Not all dimensions, metrics, or reports are supported. Moreover, calculated metrics are not currently supported. If any of the following is true about the report, Analytics 360 won't be able to create an expanded data set, and you'll still see the (other) row:

  • Contains channel grouping dimensions
  • Is an overview card
  • Has more than 6 dimensions or 12 metrics, including dimensions used in comparisons and filters
  • Includes a filter that uses an OR clause
