You can receive a summary of long or multiple messages on Google Assistant in Android Auto and Google built-in cars. This feature isn't available for all devices, regions, countries, and languages.
Select the message summary
Important:
- Artificial intelligence generates your message summaries so there could be mistakes. You can turn this off any time in Android Auto app or Google Assistant settings.
- Google Assistant doesn’t log messages or summaries, and the interactions aren’t used to train the Large Language Model (LLM).
On the Android Auto app
- At the bottom left, tap Settings .
- To receive summaries of your messages, under “Notifications,” turn on Message Summary.
With Google built into your car
- On the vehicle display, tap Settings Google Google Assistant.
- To receive message summaries, turn on Play message summaries.
Tip: You can also opt in for message summaries the first time the feature is used.
Play message summary for first time
If you receive a message with more than 40 words for the first time, your Assistant plays a request for approval to summarize:
- To give permission: Say “Yes.”
- The summary plays, and the flow continues.
- To deny permission: Say “No” to cancel while the message plays.
- The feature is disabled. For Android Auto, you can reactivate it in settings on the phone and Android Auto. For Google built into your car, you can reactivate it in Google Assistant settings.
- Assistant plays the full message.
If there’s only one long message or multiple messages from the same sender or group, the messages are automatically summarized when you tap Play aloud. Otherwise, your Assistant reads the message without summarization.
If there are multiple conversations from different senders or apps, your Assistant reads them one by one.
