You can send and read messages with Google Assistant through SMS, messaging apps, or your watch to quickly communicate with your contacts without needing to type.
For example, you can say:
- "Send a message to Tom."
- "Send a message to Mom."
- "Send a message on WhatsApp."
What you need
For your phone:
- Google Assistant enabled.
- The ability to send messages through SMS or an app like WhatsApp.
For your watch:
- Google Assistant set up.
- Be signed into a messaging app like Viber or LINE on your paired Android device.
Send & reply to messages on your device

After you get Google Assistant on your watch, you can ask it to send messages with:
To send a message:
- On your watch, press and hold the power button or say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google."
- Say a command. For example:
- “Send a WhatsApp message to Nathan.”
- “Send a Telegram message to Hannah: ‘I'm on my way.’”
- “Send a Viber message.”
- On your headphones, press the button to talk to your Google Assistant.
- Say a command, for example:
- Send Kelsey a text
- Send Kelsey a text saying "Do you want to have lunch tomorrow?"
- When you’re finished, your Google Assistant will play your message.
- To send the message, say "Send."
- To change the message, say "Change."
- To cancel the message, say "Cancel."
First, turn on notifications if you want to:
- Be notified when you receive a message
- Listen to a message you received
Your Assistant will let you know when you’ve received a message.
- To hear a message you received, press the button.
- To reply, press the button after the message is read.
- Say your message, for example:
- "Yes, 12PM works for me"
- When you’re finished, your Google Assistant will play your message.
- To send the message, press the button.
- To change the message, press and record your message again.
- To cancel the message, double press the button.
Read your messages
Important: Before Assistant can read your messages, you need to give the Google app access to your notifications.
- On your Android phone, touch and hold the Home button or say "Hey Google."
- Say, “read my messages.”
