Make calls on your Google Assistant device

Important:

As of December 2021, Google-supported phone calls from your speakers and smart displays can only be made to numbers in your Google Contacts. Learn more about this change.
In December 2022, Google-supported phone calls from non-Google speakers and smart displays may no longer work. VoIP, such as Duo, will work normally.
As of February 2024, Google Assistant will no longer support a call to a smart speaker or smart display device from another Assistant-enabled device.

You can ask Google Assistant to make phone calls to your friends, family and businesses on your speaker, smart display or Pixel Tablet. You can't receive incoming phone calls.

Where phone calls are supported

US and Canada: You can make phone calls on most speakers and smart displays.
Other countries: Phone calls aren't currently supported on speakers and smart displays, but you can make calls with Duo on them. Learn how to make calls with Duo.

Google Assistant-enabled devices that can make phone calls

Important: Phone calls aren't supported on Bose or Sonos speakers with Google Assistant built in, and are no longer supported on any Smart Clock.

Who you can call

Important: You can't make calls to emergency services.

You can make phone calls to:

US or Canada phone numbers from a US number
International and premium (1–900) numbers if you linked your device to a Google Fi number or Google Voice number that has credits.

How much calls cost

You can call most US and Canada numbers at no charge.

Step 1: Set up calling

Important: To make calls on your Google Assistant-enabled device, make sure that it’s set up in the Google Home app. Learn how to set up your device.

Step 1: Sync your contacts

To call your Google Contacts, turn on personal results.

To call contacts saved on your Android phone or tablet, manage contact info from your devices.

(Optional) Step 2: Show your number when you make calls

Unless you choose to show a different number, the recipient will find "Private" or "Anonymous".

Show your phone number

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app .
At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial Assistant settings.
Under "All settings", tap Communication Call providers.
Under 'Your own number', tap Edit Add or change phone number.
Enter your phone number, then tap Add.
When you receive a text with a code, enter the code.
- If you don't receive a code, wait 30 seconds and then tap Send new code.
Tap Verify.

Tip: You can find the phone number under "Your own number". It can take up to 10 minutes for it to appear.

Hide your phone number

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app .
At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial Assistant settings.
Under "All settings", tap Communication Call providers.
Under "Your own number", tap Edit Use unlisted number.

(Optional) Step 3: Use your Google Fi or Google Voice number

Important: Google Fi is only available in the US. Google Voice is available in the US and Canada.

You can use this number when you make calls. This number is tied to your billing for those services.

Open the Google Home app .
At the top right, tap your profile picture or initial Assistant settings.
Under "All settings", tap Communication Call providers.
Select an available service.
Follow the on-screen instructions.

(Optional) Step 4: Let multiple people call their contacts

Important: Everyone can call the contacts of the first person who linked their Google Account if that person has personal results turned on and no one links their voice with Voice Match.

Anyone can call numbers, businesses or places. To let multiple people call their contacts on a speaker or smart display, each person needs to link their voice with their Google Account. Learn how to link your voice with Voice Match.

Tip: You can let others call selected household contacts from your speaker or smart display. Learn how to set up household contacts.

Start and end calls with your voice

To start a call, say "Hey Google", then say a command:

"Call [contact name]."
"Call [business name]."
"What is the nearest [business]?" then "Call them".
"Call [phone number]."

On Pixel 4 and later, you can also accept or decline a call with commands such as "Answer" and "Decline".

Get help with automated messages and phone menus

When you call a business with an automated phone system, you get a live transcript of the call to help you navigate automatic messages and the menu. Assistant can also help you wait on hold and connect you to the call when an agent joins the line.

Important: This feature is available on Pixel 3a and later Pixel phones in English in the US.

Open the Phone app .
Tap More Settings Direct My Call.
Turn Direct My Call on or off.

Set up Duo calling

Important: Before you follow these steps, if you already use Duo, connect your Google Account to your Duo phone number in the Duo app. Learn how to connect your Google Account.

On a speaker

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app .
At the bottom, tap Home .
Touch and hold your speaker.
At the top right, tap Device settings Communication Duo calling.
Follow the on-screen instructions.

On a smart display

On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Home app .
At the bottom, tap Home .
Touch and hold your smart display.
At the top right, tap Device settings Voice and video calls Duo video calling.
Follow the on-screen instructions.

Step 2: Make a call

Say "Hey Google", then say a command:

"Call [contact name]."
"Call [business name]."
"What is the nearest [business]?" then "Call them".
"Call [phone number]."

Use Google Assistant during a call

On speakers, you can still ask Google Assistant for basic information like "What's the weather" or "How tall is Mt Everest?" during a call.

On smart displays, you can only use Google Assistant for actions related to your call. For example, you can silence alarms.

Step 3: End a call

You can use voice commands, buttons or gestures to end a call.

Say, "Hey Google, hang up".
Tap End call.
