Send a voice message in Google Chat

You can send a voice message to a person or group in Google Chat and transcribe these voice messages into text.

Send a voice message

Important: If this is the first time you send a voice message to a particular person, they must accept your message request before you can chat with them.

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. In the bottom navigation menu, tap New chat .
  3. Enter a name or email address, then tap Done.
    • When you enter a name or email address, you can get suggestions.
    • To start a group DM, add more names or email addresses.
  1. In the reply area, tap the mic .
  2. Your voice message begins to record.
  3. Tap the stop button and then Send .
  4. To delete your recording, tap Delete .

View or hide voice message transcription

  1. On your Android device, open the Chat app or Gmail app .
    • In Gmail: At the bottom, tap Chat .
  2. Tap a conversation, direct message, or space.
  3. To view the voice message transcript, below the voice message, tap View transcript.
    • Sender: Tap below the voice message and then Show more.
    • Receiver: Tap below the voice message and then View transcript.
  4. To hide the transcript, tap Hide transcript.
