Renew annual upgrades for standalone devices

For administrators who manage ChromeOS devices for a business or school.

If you have the annual Chrome Enterprise Upgrade or Kiosk & Signage Upgrade plan, you need to renew your upgrades at the end of each annual term. Perpetual upgrades, that cover the life of the device, don't need to be renewed.

If you don't renew your upgrades before the end of your term, your service is suspended. You can no longer enroll devices, configure settings, and apply policies to users and devices in your organization.

Note: If you have ChromeOS devices with bundled upgrades in your organization, you don’t need to purchase separate upgrades for them. Each device has an integrated perpetual upgrade that covers the life of the device. For details about bundled devices, go to About ChromeOS devices with bundled upgrades.

How do I renew my upgrades?

How you renew depends on how you purchased your upgrades:

  • If you purchased Chrome Enterprise Upgrade or Kiosk & Signage Upgrade annual upgrades through an authorized partner, you’ll need to contact them to renew the upgrades.

  • If you purchased Chrome Enterprise Upgrade or Kiosk & Signage Upgrade annual upgrades from the Google Admin console, you should set up your billing and payment plan so that upgrades automatically renew when the term ends.

Automatically renew upgrades

If you purchased your upgrades from the Admin console, we recommend that you update your billing account to automatically renew your contract. That way, your service isn’t at risk of being interrupted when it's time to renew. And, your 12-month commitment for all upgrades automatically continues on your next renewal date.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

Sign in using an account with super administrator privileges (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the Admin console Home page, go to Billing.
  3. To the left of Chrome Enterprise Upgrade, click the Down arrow Down arrow.
  4. Next to Renewal options, click Change.
  5. Select Auto-renew my contract and click Save.

Common questions

What happens if I don’t renew my upgrades?

If you don’t renew your upgrades at the end of the term, your management service will be suspended. You won’t be able to enroll devices, configure settings, or apply policies to ChromeOS devices in your organization.

What happens if I have both perpetual and annual Chrome Enterprise Upgrades?

Perpetual upgrades won't be affected if your annual upgrades expire or are reduced. However, if you have more devices enrolled than perpetual upgrades when your annual upgrades expire (and aren't renewed), you can't access the Device settings page in your Admin console anymore.
Current policies still apply on users' devices. To access the Device settings page again, purchase additional upgrades or deprovision devices so that you have at least one upgrade per device. If you have trouble managing your service after your annual upgrade expires, contact the Chrome support team.

What if I renew my service, but with fewer upgrades?

If you choose to renew your service for fewer upgrades than your previous annual order, you need to ensure that the quantity of enrolled devices is the same or less than the number of upgrades you’re renewing. If you have more devices enrolled than your upgrade count after renewal, you have a grace period to resolve the discrepancy. After the grace period, your devices will stop receiving their configured policies until the number of upgrades you’re using is the same or less than the upgrade total.

For example, let’s say your original order was for 100 upgrades. You only want to renew 50 upgrades but you still have 70 devices enrolled. You need to unenroll 20 devices before you renew your upgrades. That way, when you renew your upgrades, the number of upgrades matches the number of devices enrolled.

Note: Chrome Enterprise Upgrade and Kiosk & Signage Upgrade are separate services. To change the upgrade type a device uses, you'll need to deprovision, wipe, and re-enroll the device using the upgrade type that you want.

What if I want to change upgrade types?

If you choose to purchase a different upgrade type instead of renewing your existing order, you'll need to complete the following steps:
  1. Purchase enough upgrades of the upgrade type that you want for your enrolled devices.
  2. Deprovision the devices.
  3. Wipe the devices.
  4. Re-enroll the devices using the new upgrade type.
