Use your Chromebook as a Wi-Fi hotspot

You can use your Chromebook as a Wi-Fi hotspot to connect other devices to the Internet.

What you need

To turn on hotspot, your Chromebook must:

Have mobile capability
Be equipped with a supported Wi-Fi chipset and supported modem firmware, and be hotspot-enabled
Have a mobile data plan with tethering subscription

Tips:

At the bottom right, select the time.
Select Settings .
Under 'Network', select Hotspot.
To the right of 'Hotspot name', select Configure.
Enter your preferred hotspot name and password.
- The hotspot name should not be empty and should not exceed 32 characters.
Select Save.

Important: If your hotspot is turned on, the connected devices will use your mobile data, and it will reduce Chromebook's battery percentage.

To turn your Chromebook hotspot on or off:

Tips:

If you have previously turned a hotspot on, you can find the hotspot setting in your Quick Settings.
If you find the hotspot option but can't turn it on or off, your device may not support the hotspot function.
If your device is connected to the mobile network but the hotspot option isn't visible on the Settings page, your device hardware can't support this feature.
- If a mobile network is connected but the hotspot option isn't available, your device hardware doesn't support the hotspot feature.

At the bottom right, select the time.

To update the hotspot name, select Configure.
You can also:
- Turn hotspot off automatically.
- Find the number of devices connected.
- Use 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi to extend compatibility. If not, ChromeOS prefers the 5 GHz band if it's allowed by local regulations.

Tip: If you turn on 'Turn off hotspot automatically', this will turn hotspot off when no device is connected within five minutes.
