Connect your Android phone to your Chromebook

You can do more with your Chromebook when you connect your Android phone such as:

  • Sync chat notifications.
  • Sync photos.
  • Send and receive text messages on your Chromebook.
  • Connect your Chromebook to your phone network.
  • Unlock your Chromebook with your phone.

What you need

Important: If you use your Chromebook at work or school, you may not be able to use these features with your phone. For more help, contact your administrator.

Connect your phone during setup

When you set up your Chromebook for the first time, you can connect your Android phone by following the on-screen instructions.

  1. When prompted on your Chromebook, select Accept & continue.
    • To skip this step, select No thanks. You can opt in any time with these steps.
  2. Select Get started.
  3. You'll get a confirmation on your phone that Smart Lock is turned on.

Tip: If there are issues with your internet connection, there might be a delay when you verify your connected device. We'll continue to attempt verification, but these features won't be available until you're online.

Connect your phone anytime

If you didn't connect your phone to your Chromebook during setup, you can at any time.

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. Under "Connected devices," next to "Android phone," select Set up.
  4. Confirm that you want to connect your phone.
  5. Enter your password.
    • If you’ve multiple phones, select the correct phone from the drop down list. It’s sorted by most recently used.
  6. Follow the on-screen instructions. Once completed, you’ll get a confirmation on your phone.
  7. Under "Connected devices," find your phone.
  8. Select which features you want to turn on.

Disconnect your phone

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. Under "Connected devices," select your phone.
  4. Select Disconnect.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to either Cancel or Disconnect.

Tip: If you want to connect your Chromebook to this phone again, follow the instructions to connect your phone anytime.

Manage connected features

Important: Most features are turned on by default.

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. Under "Connected devices," select your phone.
  4. Turn features on or off:
    • To turn all features on or off, next to Connect to your phone, select the toggle.
    • To turn off individual features, select the toggle for that feature.

Troubleshoot issues with pairing your phone

I can't connect to a different phone

To pair a new Android phone to your Chromebook, you must first disconnect your current device, then turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

  1. On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
  2. Select Settings .
  3. Under "Connected devices," select your phone.
  4. Select Disconnect.
  5. To disconnect, follow the on-screen instructions. Learn how to connect your phone anytime.
Tip: If you still can’t connect your new device, prepare your phone to connect with your Chromebook.
I can’t connect my phone or find the option to connect

If you can’t connect your phone to your Chromebook, or you don’t find the option to connect your phone:

  • Check that your phone has the latest updates for:
  • Sign in to the same Google Account on your phone and on your Chromebook.
  • If there are multiple entries for your phone, select the first one. If the phone doesn't connect after a few minutes, forget the phone and try again with another selection.
Tip: If your Chromebook is for work or school, you may need to contact your administrator to connect your phone to your Chromebook.
