Your Chromebook automatically checks for and downloads operating system updates when connected to the internet.

Update your Chromebook

Restart your Chromebook to finish an update

  1. When your Chromebook downloads a software update:
    • At the bottom right, next to time, find the "Update available" notification.
  2. In the notification, select Restart.
    • Your Chromebook will restart and update.

Tip: If you use your Chromebook at work or school, learn how to manage updates or contact your administrator.

Check for Chromebook updates

  1. Turn on your Chromebook.
  2. Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi.
  3. At the bottom right, select the time and then Settings .
  4. At the bottom left, select About ChromeOS.
  5. Under "Google ChromeOS," find your Chromebook operating system version.
  6. To update to the latest version, select Check for updates.
    • If this option isn't available, your Chromebook may be up to date.
  7. If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.

Tip: If your Chromebook uses your phone's internet connection or its own mobile data, you'll get an alert about how much mobile data it needs to update. You can then stop or continue with the update.
