You can use your nearby Android phone to unlock your Chromebook. If you use your Chromebook at work or school, you may not be able to use these features with your phone. For more help, contact your administrator.
What you need
For your Chromebook, you'll need:
- A connected Android phone
- An Internet connection
- To sign in to the same Google Account as your phone
For your phone, you'll need:
- Android version L-MR1 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
- Your phone unlocked
- Bluetooth turned on
- Screen lock set up
Turn Smart Lock on or off
Smart Lock is on by default after you connect your Android phone. You can stop your phone from unlocking your Chromebook at any time.
- On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings .
- Under 'Connected devices', select your Android phone.
- Turn Smart Lock on or off.
Tip: If your phone and Chromebook are signed in to the same account, you can use your phone to unlock multiple Google Accounts on your Chromebook.
Fix problems
Once you connect your Android phone, you’ll receive a notification on your phone that Smart Lock is ready to use. If you do not get this notification, you may need to request verification again.
- On your Chromebook, at the bottom right, select the time.
- Select Settings .
- Under 'Connected devices', select your Android phone.
- If the status is 'Pending' a few minutes after you connected with your phone, select Verify to submit another request.
- You'll get a notification on your phone when Smart Lock is activated.
If you can't unlock your device with your Android phone, check that both your phone and your Chromebook:
- Are connected to the Internet
- Have been restarted

Help keep your personal info safe
- When your device isn’t in use, lock your screen.
- If your Android phone or device is stolen, immediately change your Google Account password. For extra security, reset your Android phone from your computer, phone or tablet.
