Local Network Privacy was introduced in iOS 14 and MacOS 15 (and later) to provide added transparency when apps or the Chrome browser connect to devices on a home network by requesting permission to access the local Wi-Fi network. All Google Cast-enabled apps and the Chrome browser need to be able to discover Cast-enabled devices (Example: Google Nest or Home speakers and displays, Chromecasts, Google TV Streamer (4K), Android TVs) for you to connect and start casting.

Turn on your Local Network Permission

1. Make sure the mobile device you’re using to cast is on the same Wi-Fi network as your speaker, display, Chromecast, Google TV Streamer, or TV that works with Google Cast.
2. Open a Cast-enabled app.
3. Tap the Cast icon . Note: The Cast icon isn't located in the same place on all Cast-enabled apps.
4. A prompt will ask you to allow access to your Wi-Fi network. Tap Ok to allow.
5. The Cast-enabled app will then ask to connect to your local network. Tap Ok when prompted if you want to connect to your local network and start casting. If you don’t want the app to connect to your local network, tap Don’t Allow. Note that you won’t be able to proceed with casting if you select Don’t Allow.
6. Once the local network permission is provided, tap the Cast icon again to find the list of available devices.
7. Select your device to start casting. If you don’t find the list of available cast devices, check the article on how to troubleshoot a "No device found" issue.

If you initially denied access to your local network but want to start casting, you can always enable access to your local network from your device’s settings.

Turn off your Local Network Permission

If you want to disable access to your local network, turn off Local Network from your device’s settings.

iPhone or iPad

1. On your iOS device’s home screen (iOS 14 or later), tap Settings.
2. Tap Privacy Local Network. You’ll find a list of apps.
3. Turn off Local Network for the app(s) you previously allowed to cast from. Note: You'll no longer be able to cast when this setting is turned off.

Mac

1. On your Mac computer (MacOS 15 or later), open System Settings.
2. Tap Privacy Local Network. You’ll find a list of apps.
3. Turn off Local Network for the app(s) you previously allowed to cast from. Note: You'll no longer be able to cast when this setting is turned off.
