Sound settings for Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer

Customize your sound format

To customize the sound format on your Chromecast with Google TV (HD), Chromecast with Google TV (4K), or Google TV Streamer (4K), adjust your advanced sound settings:

  1. Turn on your Google streaming device and then go to All Settings at the top right of the TV screen.
  2. Select Display & Sound and then Advanced sound settings and then Surround sound format selection and then Manual.
  3. In the section Supported formats, select the format you want to use.

Customize your output format (for Google TV Streamer only)

Follow these steps to customize your format settings:

  1. Turn on your streaming device and then go to All Settings at the top right of the TV screen.

  2. Select Display & Sound and then Audio options and then Output format.

  3. In the section Output format, select Automatic to let your system set the best format for you.

Alternatively, you can choose a specific format to use.

  • Automatic (Recommended): When selected, your system will choose the best audio quality format available. You may need to unplug your Google TV Streamer from the power source for 1 minute, then plug it back in for the settings change to take effect.

  • Dolby Digital Plus: An enhanced version of Dolby Digital that offers higher surround sound audio quality and supports up to 7.1 channels.

  • Dolby Digital: Delivers up to 5.1 discrete channels. This adds realism and depth to the surround sound experience for sporting events, dramatic movies, and other types of programming.

  • Pulse-Code Modulation (PCM) stereo: PCM is a method of encoding used for uncompressed digital audio and a multi-channel version that can also support 7.1 channels. “Stereo” refers to a 2-channel digital audio track.

Note: If Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital, or PCM stereo is selected, your media equipment (TV, A/V receiver, or soundbar) should also support this format to avoid audio or visual issues.

Control volume with voice, phone, or smart display screen

You can set up your Chromecast Voice Remote or Google TV Streamer Voice Remote to control the volume on your streaming device instead of your TV, receiver, or soundbar. If you choose this option, you can control the volume in the following ways:

  • Voice control on a speaker or smart display
  • A phone or tablet with the Google Assistant or Google Home app
  • Touchscreen control on a smart display
  • The Voice Remote volume button

Important: You might experience unexpected results because of the difference between the streaming device's volume settings and the volume settings on your TV, receiver, or soundbar. For example, if you mute your TV with the remote that came with it and then try to change the volume with your voice, your TV will stay muted.

  1. To start setup, go to All Settings  at the top right of the TV screen.
  2. Select Remotes & Accessories and then Set up remote buttons and then Volume control and then name of the streaming device.
