Video quality issues on Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer

Troubleshoot video quality issues on Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer.

If your video freezes, stutters, or is not smooth, try these troubleshooting steps.

Step 1: Check if there are any firmware updates available

Refer to Chromecast and Google TV Streamer firmware versions and release notes.

Step 2: Reboot the streaming device

Chromecast with Google TV

From Google TV

  1. Using your Chromecast Voice Remote, navigate to the upper right of your TV screen Settings Settings.
  2. Select System Restart Restart.

From the power source

  1. Unplug the power cable from Chromecast with Google TV.
  2. Leave it unplugged for one minute.
  3. Insert the cable back into Chromecast with Google TV.
Note: When you unplug Chromecast with Google TV from the TV’s HDMI port, it does not reboot the device. It must be disconnected from the power source in order to reboot.

Google TV Streamer (4K)

From Google TV

  1. At the top right of your TV screen, select All settings Settings.
  2. Select System and then Restart.

From the power source

  1. Unplug the power cable from the streaming device.
  2. Leave it unplugged for one minute.
  3. Insert the cable back into the streaming device.
Note: When you unplug Google TV Streamer from the TV’s HDMI port, it doesn’t reboot the device. It must be disconnected from the power source in order to reboot. 

Step 3: Reboot the Wi-Fi router

Check the manufacturer of your router for instructions.

Step 4: Check your cable equipment and setup

  • Chromecast with Google TV (4K): Ensure your TV and any connected audio equipment (A/V receiver or soundbar) can support up to 4K resolution.
  • Chromecast with Google TV (HD): Ensure your TV and any connected audio equipment (A/V receiver or soundbar) can support up to 1080p resolution.
  • Google TV Streamer (4K):
    • Use an “Ultra High Speed” HDMI 2.1 certified cable to connect to your Google TV Streamer. 
    • Ensure your TV and any connected audio equipment (A/V receiver or soundbar) supports HDMI 2.1.
    • If the Google TV Streamer is directly plugged into the TV, make sure your audio system is connected to the TV's e-ARC HDMI port using an HDMI 2.1 cable.

Step 5: Check if the TV is tuned to the same HDMI input where the streaming device is plugged in

  • For Chromecast with Google TV (4K), make sure your HDMI cable supports 4K and HDMI 2.0.
  • For Google TV Streamer (4K), make sure your HDMI cable supports 4K and HDMI 2.1.

For information on the HDMI inputs, check with the TV manufacturer for instructions.

Step 6: Check if the TV has a motion compensation mode

Try enabling, disabling, or adjusting the motion compensation mode.

Note: This feature may be named differently depending on the TV brand and may usually be found in the picture or display settings menu.
