You can organize your document with text styles like titles, headings, and a table of contents. You can customize the font and size of the text styles and set your styles as defaults.
Add, change, or delete a table of contents
You can see your document structure with a table of contents. Each item in the table of contents links to your document headings or title.
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- Click where you want the table of contents.
- Click Insert Table of contents.
- Choose how you want the table of contents to look.
To delete it, right-click and click Delete table of contents.
You can change the formatting of your table of contents.
- On your computer, open a Google Doc that contains a table of contents.
- Click the table of contents.
- To the left of the table of contents, click More table of contents options More options.
- In the panel on the right you can change the format of your table of contents and the heading indents.
Important: If your document is in pageless format, you won't be able to change the formatting of your table of contents.
You can also update your table of contents if you add new titles and headings in your document.
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- Add a heading in your document.
- Click Refresh . The change will update in your table of contents.
Make a title or heading
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- Select the text you want to change.
- Click Format Paragraph styles.
- Click a text style:
- Normal text
- Title
- Subtitle
- Heading 1-6
- Click Apply ‘text style.'
- On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- Select text with the style you want to use.
- Click Format Paragraph styles Normal text or Heading 1-6 Update ‘Heading' to match.
- All of the text in your document with the same text type, such as "Heading 4" or "Normal text," will be updated to match your initial selection.
Note: If you change the style of normal text, the heading fonts will also change to the new style.
On your computer, open a document in Google Docs.
- Set a default style: Click Format Paragraph styles Options Save as my default styles.
- Apply a default style: Click Format Paragraph styles Options Use my default styles.
- Restore original to the Google style: Click Format Paragraph styles Options Reset styles.
Use collapsible headings in your Google Doc
If your document is in pageless mode, you can expand and collapse your titles and headings to organize your content or hide certain sections.
Tip: Anyone that has edit, comment, or view access to a Google Doc can expand and collapse headings.
- On your computer, open a Google Doc that's in pageless mode.
- Hover over the heading you want to expand or collapse.
- To the left of the heading, click Expand heading or Collapse heading .
Expand or collapse multiple headings
If you have many headings in a document, you can choose to collapse or expand all headings of the same style.
- On your computer, open a Google Doc that's in pageless mode.
- Right click a heading.
- Click Expand all headings of the same style or Collapse all headings of the same style .
