Add and edit tables

Organize information in a document or presentation with a table. You can add and delete tables, and adjust the size and style of table rows and columns.

If you're using Google Docs on a computer, you can also:

  • Sort rows
  • Drag and move rows and columns
  • Pin table header rows so they repeat at the top of each page
  • Prevent information from overflowing across pages

Add a table

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app or Google Slides app.
  2. Open a document or presentation.
  3. Tap where you'd like to add a table.
  4. In the top right, tap Add Add.
  5. Tap Table Table.
  6. Choose the number of rows and columns you want in your table.
  7. Tap Insert table.

Add rows or columns

Google Docs

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app.
  2. Open a document.
  3. Tap any cell in a table.
  4. Tap Format Format.
  5. Under "Table," tap one of the following:
    • Column left Insert column left
    • Column right Insert column right
    • Row above Insert row above
    • Row below Insert row below

Google Slides

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Slides app.
  2. Open a presentation.
  3. Tap a table.
  4. Tap the gray bar next to the row or column.
  5. Tap one of the following:
    • Insert column left Insert column left
    • Insert column right Insert column right
    • Insert row above Insert row above
    • Insert row below Insert row below

If you don’t see these options, you may have to tap the right arrow in the menu.

Delete rows, columns, or table

Google Docs

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app.
  2. Open a document.
  3. Tap a table.
  4. Tap the gray bar next to the row or column you want to delete.
  5. Tap Delete column, Delete row, or Delete table.

If you don’t see these options, you may have to tap the right arrow in the menu.

Google Slides

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Slides app.
  2. Open a presentation.
  3. Tap a table.
  4. Tap the gray bar next to the row or column you want to delete.
  5. Tap Delete.
  6. To delete the table, tap the table and then tap Delete.

If you don’t see these options, you may have to tap the right arrow in the menu.

Merge cells in a table

Google Docs

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app.
  2. Open a document.
  3. Tap a table.
  4. Tap the gray bar next to the row or column you want to merge.
    • To merge a combination of rows and columns, tap and drag the blue dot at the corner.
  5. Tap Format Format and then Table.
  6. At the bottom, turn on Merge cells.

Note: To unmerge cells, turn off Merge cells.

Google Slides

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Slides app.
  2. Open the presentation.
  3. Highlight the cells you want to merge.
  4. Tap Merge cells.

If you don’t see these options, you may have to tap the right arrow in the menu.

Resize and style tables

Resize rows and columns

Google Docs

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app.
  2. Open the document.
  3. Tap the existing table.
  4. Tap the cell in the row or column you want to change.
  5. Tap Format Format and then tap Table.
  6. To change the row and column size, tap the up or down arrows next to "Minimum row height" and "Column width."

Google Slides

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Slides app.
  2. Open a presentation.
  3. Tap the existing table.
  4. Tap the row header or column header you want to change.
  5. To resize the row or column, touch and drag the lines at the edge of the row or column header.

Resize a table

Google Docs

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app.
  2. Open the document.
  3. Tap the existing table.
  4. In the top left of the table, tap the square.
  5. Around the edge of the table, touch and drag the gray bars.

Google Slides

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Slides app.
  2. Open a presentation.
  3. Tap the table you want to resize.
  4. Around the edge of the table, touch and drag the blue squares.

Style individual cells in a table

  1. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Google Docs app or Google Slides app.
  2. Open a document or presentation.
  3. Tap the cells you want to change.
  4. Tap Format Format and then tap Table.
  5. Tap the style you want to change:
    • Fill color
    • Border color
    • Border width or Border weight
    • Border dash
