Right-to-left controls turn on automatically when you open a document, spreadsheet, or presentation with right-to-left text, or when you add text in a right-to-left language. You can also turn on right-to-left controls manually.
Turn on right-to-left controls
Before you can write, view and edit text in right-to-left, you need to turn it on on your computer.
Use right-to-left language controls
After you turn on right-to-left controls, you can change the layout of documents with text in a right-to-left language. If there's no right-to-left language text in the document, you can't see these controls.
Change paragraph direction
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Docs app .
- Open a document that contains text in a right-to-left language.
- Tap Edit .
- Tap Format Paragraph.
- To change paragraph direction, tap Paragraph direction .
Note: Right-to-left controls will also automatically turn on for users that have a right-to-left language as their phone language setting.
Google Sheets
Change the direction of the columns for a particular sheet
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Sheets app .
- Open a spreadsheet that contains text in a right-to-left language.
- On the sheet tab at the bottom, tap the Down arrow .
- To change the direction of the spreadsheet grid, tap Right-to-left.
Note: This change will only apply to the current sheet, not all sheets in the spreadsheet.
Change paragraph direction
- On your Android phone or tablet, open the Google Slides app .
- Open a presentation that contains text in a right-to-left language.
- Tap the text you want to change.
- Tap Format Paragraph.
- To change paragraph direction, tap Paragraph direction .
Note: Right-to-left controls will also automatically turn on for users that have a right-to-left language as their phone language setting.
