Create or edit marking periods

Important: This article is for teachers.

To better plan, organise and analyse assignments and marks, set up marking periods. These periods can match your school or district's marking structure, such as terms or semesters. Once set up, assignments are automatically organised into marking periods based on the due date (or publish date if no due date is set).

Marking periods are available for:

  • Google Workspace for Education Plus editions, formerly known as G Suite Enterprise for Education
  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade editions

Only a school administrator can select your edition.

Set up marking periods

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click your class and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Marking', click Add marking period.
  4. Set each period's:
    • Name
    • Start date and end dates
      • Tips:
        • Start and end dates for marking periods cannot overlap.
        • Marking period names must be unique.
  5. To add another marking period, click Add marking period.
  6. To add current assignments to your marking period, turn on Apply to existing assignments.
    • For assignments with due dates: The due date determines the grading period.
    • For assignments that you published within a marking period: The marking period is set.
    • For assignments with publish date and due dates that fall outside of a marking period: Set their marking periods individually since marking periods aren't automatically set.
  7. To save your changes, click Save.

Tips:

  • If you rename a marking period, you don't need to update any stream items.
  • Coordinate your marking periods with your school's marking periods.

Copy marking periods to multiple classes

Important: When you copy marking periods to other classes, they replace the existing ones.

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click your class and then Settings .
  3. Under 'Marking periods', next to 'Copy to other classes', click Select classes .
  4. Select the classes that you want to add the marking periods to.

    • Review your assignments.
    • Remove any deleted or out-of-date marking periods.
