Manage class details and settings

This article is for teachers.

After you create a class, you can change the class details and select settings. For example, you can change the name of the class, and select how classwork posts appear on the Stream page.

Your changes apply only to the class you update. To update multiple classes, make the changes in each class.

To manage your Classroom notifications, go to Turn notifications on or off.

View or change class details 

Edit a class name, description, section, room, or subject

A class name is required.

Note: If you edit the class name, the name of your class Drive folder doesn't automatically update. To update the folder name, go to your class Drive folder.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom app.
  2. Tap the classand thenStreamand thenSettings .

    The class name is automatically entered.

  3. Enter your changes and tap Save.

    Note: Blank fields don't show in the student view.

Note: If you edit the class name, the name of your class Drive folder doesn't automatically update. To update the folder name, go to your class Drive folder.

View or change the class invite codes

Each class you create has a class code and class invite link. You can share the code or link with students, so they can join your class. For instructions, go to Invite students to your class

View or change the class video meeting link

Depending on how your admin set up Classroom, you might be able to use Google Meet for class video meetings.
For instructions and requirements to use Meet in Classroom, go to Start a video meeting for education.

View or change Stream page settings

Show or hide classwork notifications on the Stream page

You can choose whether classwork notifications show on the Stream page, and what details the notifications show.
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom app.
  2. Tap the classand thenSettings .
  3. Under General, tap Classwork on the stream and choose an option:

     
    • Show attachments and details—Students see an expanded view of notifications.
    • Show condensed notifications—Students see notifications without attachments and details.
    • Hide notifications—No Classwork notifications show on the Stream page
  4. Tap Save.

Note: On classwork posts, only teachers see the totals for student work status.

Set permissions for student posts

On the Stream page, students can post messages and comment on other posts, if you allow. You can set the permissions for individual students or the whole class. 

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom app.
  2. Tap the classand thenSettings .

  3. Under General, tap Stream settings and choose an option:

    • Students can post and comment—(Default) Students can create a post on the Stream page and comment on any item.
    • Students can only comment—Students can comment on an existing post, but not create a post.
    • Only teachers can post or comment—Students can't comment on or create posts on the Stream page. This setting is the same as muting all students.
      Note: For details about muting and unmuting a student, go to Set student post and sharing permissions.
  4. Tap Save.
View deleted student posts

This feature isn't available in the Android version of Classroom. Tap Computer to see the instructions.
