Turn on originality reports

Admins: School matches are OFF by default and can be enabled for your organisation. Learn how to turn on school matches for originality reports in Classroom.

This article is for teachers.

You and your students can use originality reports to check work for authenticity. When you run a report, it can:

  • Compare a student's Google Docs, Google Slides and Microsoft Word files against webpages and books on the Internet.
  • Link to detected sources and flag uncited text.
  • Check against previous student submissions from your school or district if your administrator has enabled school matches.
  • Copy the student's work to the school matches corpus, so that it can be compared to other students' work, when all of the following is true:
    • School matches are enabled for the domain.
    • Originality reports are enabled for the assignment.
    • The file type is supported.
Available languages
Originality reports are only available for Google Workspace for Education accounts that are set to:
  • Arabic

Before you begin

  • If you have an Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals account, you can turn on originality reports for five assignments per class. To get unlimited originality reports, ask your Google Workspace admin to get the Teaching and Learning Upgrade or upgrade to Google Workspace for Education Plus.
  • You can find originality reports for 45 days. After that, you can run another report in the marking tool.
  • When you turn on originality reports for an assignment, students can run three reports on their work before they hand it in. You can't find the reports that students run. After students have run their last report, they can continue to work on the assignment before handing it in. 
  • In order to create an originality report, documents must not exceed a file size of 2 MB.

Turn on originality reports when you create an assignment

  1. On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the classand thenClassroom.
  3. Click Createand thenAssignment.
  4. Tick the Check plagiarism (originality) box.

Turn on originality reports after receiving student work

If you turn on originality reports after a student has submitted their work, the student can't run a report until you've returned their work. To let students run a report, return their work and allow them to resubmit their assignment.

  1. On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Next to the assignment, click More and thenEdit.
  4. Tick the Check plagiarism (originality) box.

Review an originality report

When students hand in their work, Classroom automatically runs an originality report for each submitted Docs or Slides file, visible only to you. If a student unsubmits and resubmits an assignment, Classroom runs another originality report for the teacher.

  1. On a computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click the classand thenClasswork.
  3. Click the assignmentand thenView assignmentand thenthe student's file.
  4. At the right, click # flagged passages.
