Manage Google Fit's permissions

When you turn on certain permissions, Google Fit can track your activities and give you better info about your fitness and activity. For example, if you lose a device, you can change your Google Fit settings on that device from another one.

Turn on physical activity tracking

When you turn on activity tracking, Fit can sense activities like steps and repetitions.

If you turn this off, Google Fit can’t automatically track your activity. You’ll only find info about activity that you enter manually or that’s tracked by a connected app.

  1. On your Android phone, open the settings app.
  2. Tap Apps and notifications and then Google Fit Google Fit.
  3. Tap Permissions and then Physical activity and then  Allow.
  4. Open Google Fit Google Fit.
  5. At the bottom, tap Profile.
  6. At the top, tap Settings Settings.
  7. Under 'Tracking preferences', turn Track your activities on or off.

Change location tracking

Google Fit can use your location to track activities like running and cycling better and show you maps of your activity. If you turn this off, Google Fit can’t use your location to track activity.
Important: Fit won't save location data for children under 13 (or the applicable age in your country).
  1. On your Android phone, open the settings app.
  2. Tap Apps and notifications and then Google Fit Google Fit.
  3. Tap Permissions and then Location.
  4. Choose how you want to track your location:
    • Allow or Allow all the time: Google Fit tracks your location even when the app isn't open. This way, Google Fit can automatically track activity like when you go for a walk.
    • Allow only while using the app: Google Fit only uses your location after you open the app. This way, Google Fit will only track location when you choose.
    • (Android 11 only) Ask every time: Google Fit asks you for permission to track your location every time you use the app.
    • Deny: Turns off location tracking completely. If you choose this option, skip the next four steps.
  5. On your phone, open Google Fit Google Fit.
  6. At the bottom, tap Profile.
  7. At the top, tap Settings Settings.
  8. Under 'Tracking preferences', choose how you want to track your location and turn some of these settings on or off:
    • Track your activities
    • Use your location
    • Include maps for all activities
Tip: On phones that run Android 11, if you don't have physical activity tracking turned on and you don't use the app for 90 days, Google Fit reverts to Deny and Google Fit won't use your location to track activity.

Delete permissions for your data

  1. On your Android phone, open the Google Fit app Google Fit.
  2. Tap Profile and then Settings Settings and then Delete Fit data permissions.
  3. To control your data storage, turn off or on:
    • Store vitals data, like your:
      • Heart rate
      • Resting heart rate
      • Respiratory rate
      • Blood glucose
      • Oxygen saturation
