What to understand before moving your account

What’s a Fitbit account and what’s a Google Account?

Before we launched Google accounts on Fitbit, you created a Fitbit account by providing information such as your name, email address, and a password. You then used your Fitbit account to log in to the Fitbit app and connect your device to sync data to your account.

A Google Account gives you access to Google services, including Gmail, Drive, Maps, YouTube, and more. You can log in to all Google services with the same account. If you use Gmail or log in to another Google service, you already have a Google Account. For more information, visit the Google Accounts webpage.

I use my Gmail address to log in to Fitbit now. Do I already have a Google Account on Fitbit?
Not necessarily. If you created a Fitbit account with your Gmail address, you must still move Fitbit to your Google Account. When you log in to the Fitbit app, tap Settings  in the top right.
If a notification prompts you to move Fitbit to the Google Account, you need to take action. Tap the notification, and follow the on-screen instructions to move Fitbit to your Google Account. If you're not ready to move, you can continue to use your Fitbit account for as long as it's supported.
What will happen to my Fitbit data if I move Fitbit to my Google Account?

Google protects Fitbit customers’ privacy and makes binding commitments with global regulators, confirming that Fitbit users’ health and wellness data won’t be used for Google Ads. This data remains separate from Google Ads data.

During the migration process, you have the opportunity to review and make changes to your Fitbit data and setup. After you complete this process, you can then manage your Fitbit data from your Google Account settings and the Fitbit app. You'll keep all historical data that you choose to move to your Google Account.

Is Fitbit sharing my data with Google before I move my account?
Fitbit doesn’t share your data with Google before you move to a Google Account unless you authorize Fitbit to share certain data with Google. For example, you may authorize Google Assistant to provide your Fitbit activity, like your step count and calories burned.
For more information on how Fitbit shares data with others, including Google, refer to Fitbit Privacy Policy section How Information Is Shared.
Will I be required to have a Google Account to use Fitbit devices and services?

Some uses of Fitbit will require a Google Account, including to sign up for Fitbit or activate newly released Fitbit and Pixel devices.

If you have a Fitbit account, you can move it to your Google Account or continue to use your existing Fitbit devices and services with your Fitbit account for as long as it's supported. Support of Fitbit accounts will continue until at least 2025. After that, a Google Account will be required to use Fitbit.

We'll keep you informed about the timeline for ending Fitbit accounts through notices within the Fitbit app, by email, and in help articles.

What if I don’t want to move Fitbit to a Google Account?
If you’re already a Fitbit customer, you can continue to use your existing Fitbit account with your existing Fitbit devices and services for as long as Fitbit accounts are supported, which will be until at least 2025. After that, you’ll need a Google Account to use Fitbit.

Error How to fix it
Your children need to update their Fitbit accounts

Before you or your family can move to Google accounts, your children must update their account or be included as part of a Google Family group. Here’s how:

  1. For each child over the age of 13 (or the applicable age in your country), open their Fitbit profile in kid view and have them upgrade their account to reflect their age as a teen. For instructions, visit How do I manage my child in the Fitbit app?
  2. After updating, your child will have a standard Fitbit account and can move to a Google Account on their own.
  3. If you still find your child's Today tab in the Fitbit app, log out and sign in again with your Fitbit credentials.
  4. Try again to move yourself and the younger members of your family to Google accounts.
Your child's Google Account isn't appearing

1. If you created a Google Account for your child with an adult’s date of birth due to past technical limitations, this birthday now needs to be changed:

  1. Sign in to your child’s Google account.
  2. In a browser window, sign in to your Google Account.
  3. Click Personal Info and then Birthday.
  4. Update the birthday and then Save.

2. If you're the main guardian in your Fitbit family and you're the family manager of your Google family group, but your child is in a different Google family group:

  • Ask the family manager of the other family group to transfer your child's account supervision to you. For more information, open the Google help article Transfer supervision.
  • After the account is transferred, try again to move your family from Fitbit to Google.

3. If you've never created a Google family group before, and your child is part of a different existing family group:

  • Create a new Google family group.
  • Ask the family manager of the other family group to transfer your child's account supervision to you. For more information, open the Google help article Transfer supervision.
  • After the account is transferred, try again to move your family from Fitbit to Google.
This Google Account is in a family group

If you're the main guardian in your Fitbit family and you're part of an existing Google family group but aren't the family manager of that group (for example, you're a parent or a family member):

  1. Leave your current Google family group.
  2. Restart the steps to move your family from Fitbit to Google accounts.

You have too many people in your Fitbit family
  1. If your Fitbit family has more than 6 people, remove some child accounts. For instructions, refer to How do I manage my child in the Fitbit app?
Note: If you remove child accounts, data associated with those accounts is deleted.
  2. Move yourself and your children to Google accounts.
