WooCommerce: Set up your Google tag

You can measure behavioural data about your site with Google Ads and Google Analytics. Follow the steps in this article to set up a tag for your Google Ads or Google Analytics account. Learn more about Installing your tag with a website builder or CMS.
 
The instructions for setting up the Google tag are different for tag IDs starting with 'AW-' (usually, Google Ads accounts) and tag IDs starting with 'ignored' (usually, Google Analytics properties). Follow the instructions below that correspond with your tag.

If you have a tag starting with 'AW-'

Before you begin

You can integrate your Woo account with Google Ads or Google Analytics for free. To set up the integration, you’ll need:

  • A valid Google sign-in
  • A Google-provided JavaScript code box
  • An active WooCommerce account

This integration is native to WooCommerce and will allow you to track 'Sales' or 'Page view' conversions. Additional features (like enhanced e-commerce functionality) can be accessed after setup. Learn more about Google Ads conversion types.

WooCommerce uses its own Google Ads plug-in that is installed separately from the base installation. Follow the steps below to install the plug-in and set up your tracking tags.

  1. Sign in to your WordPress admin console.
  2. From the Page menu on the left, click Plug-ins.
  3. On the 'Plug-ins' page, click Add new.
  4. On the 'Plug-ins' page under 'Search Results', enter 'Google for WooCommerce' and click Install now to go to setup automatically after you click 'Install Now', you'll be taken to setup automatically.
  5. Click Start listing products to begin.
  6. Click Connect to connect your site to WordPress.
  7. Enter your WordPress email address or username and click Continue.
  8. Enter your email address or username and password and click Log In.
  9. Approve the connection to WordPress.
  10. Connect to Google by clicking Connect.
  11. Choose your Google account.
  12. Grant permission for WooCommerce to access your Google Account.
  13. Choose your catalogue to use and click Connect.
  14. After the catalogue is connected, click Continue.
  15. Choose an audience and click Continue.
  16. Enter shipping details and click Continue.
  17. Finish the final steps and click Complete setup.

If you have a tag starting with 'ignored'

  • An active WooCommerce account

WooCommerce uses its own Google Analytics plug-in that is installed separately from the base installation. Follow the steps below to install the plug-in and set up your tracking tags.

  1. Sign in to your WordPress admin console.
  2. From the Page menu on the left, click Plug-ins.
  3. On the 'Plug-ins' page, click Add new.

  5. Once the plug-in is downloaded and installed, click Installed plug-ins under the 'Plug-ins' drop-down.
  6. Under 'WooCommerce Google Analytics Integration', click Activate.
  7. Once the plugin is activated, the 'Plugins' page will reload. Click Settings under the 'WooCommerce Google Analytics Integration' Plugin.
