Add a new payment method in Google Ads

In this article

Instructions

Keep in mind: When adding a new card, you might notice a temporary pre-authorization hold on your account. There is no action required from you, and the hold will automatically drop within a week.

The steps for adding a payment method vary depending on whether this is the first time you're entering your billing information into Google Ads.

Note: Billing information must be provided before creating a Google Ads account.

Entering billing information for the first time

To enter your billing information follow the steps below:

  1. While signing up for a new Google Ads account, you’ll be asked to add your business information and create a new campaign. Learn how to set up your first campaign.
  2. After you have submitted all the required information, you’ll be redirected to the “Enter your account and payment details” page.
  3. On the “Enter your account and payment details” page, click the Billing country drop-down menu and select the country or territory where your billing address is located. Your billing country determines the billing options that are available for your location and currency. If you select your billing country and aren’t prompted to enter your billing information, then you’ll need to enter your billing information in Google Ads after you’ve finished creating your account. Your ad won’t be able to show until you’ve done this.
  4. Make sure the correct time zone is selected. If not, click the drop-down menu to change it. Your reports, statistics, and billing are all affected by the time zone you select, so choose carefully.
  5. If you have a promotional code (also known as coupons or vouchers), enter the code in the “Introductory offer” field and click Apply.
  6. Click Create new payment profile. A popup window will appear.
  7. Your “Profile type” defaults to "Organization" but you can change to “Individual” if appropriate for tax purposes in your country.
  8. Enter the organization name, your legal name, and your address.
  9. Click Create.
  10. On the “Enter your account and payment details” page, click Add payment method.
  11. Enter information for the payment method you want to use for this account, such as a credit or debit card.
Note: If you're using a credit or debit card, you might view a temporary authorization on your card account, which is typically removed within a week. The exact amount will be shown in your Ads account during sign-up.
  12. Click on the I agree to the Google Ads Terms checkbox.
  13. Click Submit.
    • If your payment setting is automatic payments: After your account is activated and your billing information has been processed, any new ads and campaigns that you create can begin running on Google. If you don't want them to run immediately, make sure that you pause your campaigns.
    • If your payment setting is manual payments: Your ads will run after you have funds in your account. Click the Billing icon Billing Icon , then select Summary and then click Add funds on the 'Available funds' card to add funds.

Updating billing information already set up

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Billing icon Billing Icon.
  2. Click Payment methods.
  3. Select Add payment method.
  4. The payment methods available to you will appear. These are based on your business address, your account's currency, your payment setting, and whether any payment methods are temporarily unavailable for your account.
  5. Enter your payment method information and agree to the Google Ads Terms and Conditions.
  6. If you want to make the newly added payment method your primary payment method, select Set as primary payment method from the Actions drop-down next to your payment method. The system will save the information for you.
  7. (Optional) Select Set as backup payment method from the Actions drop-down to set an alternate payment method as a backup if your primary payment method gets declined.

About Google Ads payments

A payment method is what you use to pay for Google Ads.

The payment methods available for your account will depend on your country and currency. Use the payment options tool to see what’s available for your account.

Note that in some cases, certain payment methods may be temporarily unavailable while Google Ads reviews your account’s eligibility to use them.

Note: If your card issuer or bank is in the European Economic Area, they may require you to go through an additional authentication process, such as a one-time code sent to your phone, to verify the ownership of your card. Your card issuer or bank may require this extra verification when you make a payment, add a new credit or debit card, or at the card issuer or bank’s discretion.

Google complies with the new security requirements imposed on banks and payment processors by the Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) in the European Economic Area. If you have any questions, please contact your card issuer or bank directly.
