About payment settings in Google Ads

 

OOO Google (Google Russia) filed for bankruptcy in Russia in June 2022 and is no longer operating. On 18 October 2023, the bankruptcy court announced the start of the liquidation phase of Google Russia’s bankruptcy proceedings. During this phase, a court-appointed liquidator will manage Google Russia and its liquidation.

These insolvency proceedings are governed by the Insolvency Law of the Russian Federation. More information about these proceedings is available on the court’s website (link) and the official bankruptcy register (link).

Payment settings determine when you pay for your ads. Google Ads has three main payment settings available in your country: automatic payments, manual payments and monthly invoicing.

  • Automatic payments: After your ads run, Google Ads automatically charges your payment method.
  • Manual payments: You make a payment before your ads run. Then, as your ads run and you accrue costs, the credit from your payment will decrease. When your payment is used up, your ads will stop running.
  • Monthly invoicing: Google provides you a line of credit for your advertising costs. You accrue costs and receive a monthly invoice.

The payment setting available for your account will depend on your account’s billing country and currency. Note that in some cases, certain payment settings may be temporarily unavailable while Google Ads reviews your account’s eligibility to use them.

You may be able to switch the payment setting for your account between automatic to manual payments, and vice versa, in your account’s Billing Settings. The option to switch from automatic to manual payments is possible only in countries where the manual payment option is available. If you are currently on manual payments and this option is no longer available in your country, you can only switch to automatic payments and you will not be able to switch back to manual payments. To change your payment setting: 

  1. Sign in to your Google Ads account
  2. In the search bar at the top of the home page, type Settings and select Settings > Billing.
    • (Alternatively, you can type the keyboard shortcut G B to go straight to Billing.) 
  3. In the 'Payments account' section, click the edit icon Edit setting, pencil icon  next to 'How you pay.'
  4. Select your desired payment setting from the drop-down menu.
  5. Follow the steps in the pop-up window to confirm the change.

Note: Only users with Admin or Edit Payments profile access can make this change. To check your access type, in the search bar at the top of the home page, type Settings to select Settings > Billing and scroll down to the bottom of the page to the 'Payments users' section. 

If you have more than one Google Ads account, this feature might not be available in all your accounts.

Automatic payments

Automatic payments is a payment setting in Google Ads. Using this setting, you first accrue advertising costs, then have those costs automatically charged to your primary payment method.

To begin, you provide your billing information once, and payments are automatically processed so that you don't have to worry that your ads will stop running if you forget to make a payment.

When you're charged

On automatic payments, we charge you for your advertising costs every month on the first day of each month or whenever your account reaches a predetermined amount known as your payment threshold.

Threshold and first of month payment boundaries

How the payment threshold works

Your payment threshold is initially set at a certain amount. Each time your account hits its threshold before the end of the month, your threshold increases, up to the highest threshold. Thresholds vary per account, country and currency, so be sure to check your account for what your current threshold is. Note that the amount billed may be slightly over the threshold if your account accrues costs quickly.

Example

Say you’re just starting out with your Google Ads account in August, and your initial threshold is £50. If you accrue £49 in costs up to September, you’ll get charged on that date, and your threshold will continue to be £50 in the next monthly billing cycle.

However, if you accrue £50 in costs before the end of the month:

  • You’ll be charged immediately.
  • Your threshold will increase to the next threshold amount, for example, £200.

Payment at Threshold

Example

Let's say an advertiser named Alan opens a Google Ads account with a £50 threshold and starts accruing costs on 1 Oct. Here's how he'll be charged, and how his threshold will change:

  • On 5 October, Alan reaches his initial payment threshold of £50. At that time, we charge him for his costs (which might be slightly more than the payment threshold if he accrued costs quickly). We increase Alan's payment threshold to £200.
  • On 23 October, Alan reaches his new payment threshold of £200, triggering Google Ads to charge him for costs accrued. Google again raises his payment threshold to £350 and Alan continues to accrue costs.
  • On 1 November, Google bills Alan for the costs accrued since the last payment threshold increase on 23 October.
  • On 20 November, Alan accrues more than £350 in charges. Google bills him and raises his payment threshold to £500.
  • Alan's next charge is initiated on 1 December.

Find your payment threshold

You can find your account's payment threshold by following these steps:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Billing icon Billing icon.
  2. Click Summary.
    • The 'Next automatic payment' card shows the potential date of your next automatic payment and your threshold amount.
    • The 'Balance' card shows your current balance. To learn how the balance is calculated follow the link 'See how this is calculated'. Your 'Balance' is the current unpaid balance or the amount owed that will be charged either on the date displayed in the next automatic payment card or when you reach your threshold limit.

You won't be emailed or notified when your payment threshold increases, so monitor this page to track your current threshold.

If you'd like to be charged less frequently or in larger increments, learn how to Change how often you're charged.

Tips

  • You can still make a manual payment even if you're using the automatic payment setting. The money will be used for future clicks, and it will reduce or delay your next automatic charge.
  • If you'd like to reduce the costs charged to your primary payment method, make a manual payment with another payment method.
  • To avoid having your ads stop because of a declined payment, we highly recommend setting up a backup payment method. If your primary payment method doesn't work for some reason, we'll charge your backup credit card to ensure that your ads keep running.
Manual payments
The manual payments setting isn't available for new accounts in the countries and territories listed below. Manual payments is a payment setting in Google Ads that allows you to make payments before your ads run. Here's how it works:

  1. Make a payment to Google Ads.
  2. Your ads run almost immediately after we have received your payment.
  3. You accrue costs, which are deducted from your payment.

As long as you've got money in your account to pay for your ads, your ads will run. Just don't forget to replenish your account! To help, we'll send you an email when the money in your account gets low (about a week's worth of your budget), and again when it's gone.

Monthly invoicing

Monthly invoicing is a payment setting in which Google provides you a line of credit for your advertising costs. You can pay by cheque, bank transfer or other payment method, depending on your location.

You might be eligible to use monthly invoicing payment setting if your business meets certain requirements. These requirements include, but aren't limited to:

  • Being registered as a business for a minimum of one year.
  • Having an active Google Ads account in good standing for a minimum of six months.
  • Spending a minimum of £5,000 a month (this can vary by country) for any three of the last 12 months.

Manual payments is a payment setting in Google Ads that allows you to make payments before your ads run. Here's how it works:

  1. Make a payment to Google Ads.
  2. Your ads run almost immediately after we have received your payment.
  3. You accrue costs, which are deducted from your payment.

As long as you've got money in your account to pay for your ads, your ads will run. Just don't forget to replenish your account! To help, we'll send you an email when the money in your account gets low (about a week's worth of your budget), and again when it's gone.

With Google Ads, you're automatically charged after your ads show (automatic payments), or you can make payments before your ads show (manual payments). You make your choice when you’re creating your account, and after that it can’t be changed.

The payment setting available for your account will depend on your account’s billing country and currency. Note that in some cases, certain payment settings may be temporarily unavailable while Google Ads reviews your account’s eligibility to use them.

Automatic payments

Automatic payments is a payment setting in Google Ads. Using this setting, you first accrue advertising costs, then have those costs automatically charged to your primary payment method.

To begin, you provide your billing information once, and payments are automatically processed so that you don't have to worry that your ads will stop running if you forget to make a payment.

When you're charged

On automatic payments, we charge you for your advertising costs every month on the first day of each month or whenever your account reaches a predetermined amount known as your payment threshold.

How the payment threshold works

Your payment threshold is initially set at a certain amount. Each time your account hits its threshold before the end of the month, your threshold increases, up to the highest threshold. Thresholds vary per account, country and currency, so be sure to check your account for what your current threshold is. Note that the amount billed may be slightly over the threshold if your account accrues costs quickly.

Example

Say you’re just starting out with your Google Ads account in August, and your initial threshold is £50. If you accrue £49 in costs up to September, you’ll get charged on that date, and your threshold will continue to be £50 in the next monthly billing cycle.

However, if you accrue £50 in costs before the end of the month:

  • You’ll be charged immediately.
  • Your threshold will increase to the next threshold amount, for example, £200.

Payment at Threshold

Example

Let's say an advertiser named Alan opens a Google Ads account with a £50 threshold and starts accruing costs on 1 Oct. Here's how he'll be charged, and how his threshold will change:

  • On 5 October, Alan reaches his initial payment threshold of £50. At that time, we charge him for his costs (which might be slightly more than the payment threshold if he accrued costs quickly). We increase Alan's payment threshold to £200.
  • On 23 October, Alan reaches his new payment threshold of £200, triggering Google Ads to charge him for costs accrued. Google again raises his payment threshold to £350 and Alan continues to accrue costs.
  • On 1 November, Google bills Alan for the costs accrued since the last payment threshold increase on 23 October.
  • On 20 November, Alan accrues more than £350 in charges. Google bills him and raises his payment threshold to £500.
  • Alan's next charge is initiated on 1 December.

Find your payment threshold

You can find your account's payment threshold by following these steps:

  1. In your Google Ads account, click the Billing icon Billing icon.
  2. Click Summary.
    • The 'Next automatic payment' card shows the potential date of your next automatic payment and your threshold amount.
    • The 'Balance' card shows your current balance. To learn how the balance is calculated follow the link 'See how this is calculated'. Your 'Balance' is the current unpaid balance or the amount owed that will be charged either on the date displayed in the next automatic payment card or when you reach your threshold limit.

You won't be emailed or notified when your payment threshold increases, so monitor this page to track your current threshold.

Tips

  • You can still make a manual payment even if you're using the automatic payment setting. The money will be used for future clicks, and it will reduce or delay your next automatic charge.
  • If you'd like to reduce the costs charged to your primary payment method, make a manual payment with another payment method.

Monthly invoicing

Monthly invoicing is a payment setting in which Google provides you a line of credit for your advertising costs. You can pay by cheque, bank transfer or other payment method, depending on your location.

You might be eligible to use monthly invoicing payment setting if your business meets certain requirements. These requirements include, but aren't limited to:

  • Being registered as a business for a minimum of one year.
  • Having an active Google Ads account in good standing for a minimum of six months.
  • Spending a minimum of £5,000 a month (this can vary by country) for any three of the last 12 months.
