Nest thermostat information menu

The Home or Nest app can give you basic information about your thermostat such as the model, serial number, software version, and other details.

Use your thermostat to check more detailed information that may not available in the app.

Home app

  1. Open the Google Home app Google Home app
  2. Tap Favorites or Devices
  3. Tap your thermostatand then Settings and then Device information.

Nest app

  1. Tap your thermostat on the app home screen.
  2. Select Settings   Technical Info.

Device information or Technical Info 

Name

The name you’ve given your thermostat

Change the device name in the Home app

Home The name of the home that your thermostat has been added to in the app
Room The room in your home that your thermostat has been assigned to (such as kitchen or hallway)
Model The model of your thermostat
Device ID Your thermostat display's unique  ID number (available only on certain thermostats)
Serial no. A unique identifier located at the back of your thermostat’s display.
Software version The software version currently installed on your thermostat
Nest thermostat software update history
Wi-Fi MAC The unique network ID assigned to your thermostat hardware when it was manufactured
IP Your thermostat’s network IP address, which is assigned by your router. You can also check the thermostat’s IP address on your Wi-Fi router’s list of connected devices.
Battery state Nest Thermostat only: the charge level of the replaceable AAA batteries: Unknown, OK, Low, or Very low
Battery voltage The current voltage of your thermostat’s internal rechargeable battery

On your thermostat

  1. Press the thermostat ring to bring up the Quick View menu.
  2. Turn the ring to Settings Nest settings icon and press to select.
  3. Turn the ring to Technical Info and press to select.

There are a few different sections with information about your Nest thermostat's sensors, Wi-Fi network, thermostat's serial and model numbers and much more. Below is a list of what you'll find on your thermostat.

Note: You might not see every section listed below on your thermostat. The available information varies based on which Nest thermostat you have.

Power 

Battery

This is the current voltage of your thermostat’s internal
rechargeable battery. The voltage will fluctuate, but it should be
higher than 3.6V when it’s charging normally.

If your thermostat isn’t receiving enough power to charge the
battery and it falls below 3.6V, your thermostat will turn off Wi-Fi,
delay software updates, and disable the screen to preserve
the battery charge and delay shutting down completely.

  • 3.7V is required to install a software update.
  • 3.6V is required for the display to turn on when you approach.
Voc Vin Iin

Voc, Vin, and Iin measure the electrical current sent over your
system’s wires to your thermostat. Below are the ranges that
the Voc, Vin and Iin should stay in during normal operation.
There are different Vin and lin values if you have a common or C
wire in your thermostat:

Nest Thermostat 

with or without C wire

  • Voc: 29 to 42V
  • Vin: 29 to 42V
  • lin: 200 to 385 mA

Nest Learning Thermostat/E

with C wire

  • Voc: 29 to 42V
  • Vin: 29 to 42V
  • lin: 100 to 200 mA

without C wire or with Power Connector

  • Voc: 29 to 42V
  • Vin: 29 to 42V
  • lin: 20 to 40 mA

Troubleshooting power issues

If your thermostat’s power is outside of the above specifications, you
may need to troubleshoot. For example, if your Nest thermostat
won’t turn on and is unresponsive, or there's a blinking red
light at the top of the thermostat’s screen, your thermostat likely
isn’t getting enough power. For troubleshooting, go to the Nest thermostat troubleshooter and select Power issue.

Troubleshooting when your thermostat won’t turn on

Network 

Wi-Fi

Here you’ll find the name of the Wi-Fi network your thermostat
is currently connected to, and the network PING (measured in
milliseconds).

The signal strength has a maximum value of 100. A signal strength
of 75 is considered strong, while a value of 36 or lower is considered
weak.

You can use the signal strength to help troubleshoot offline issues
with your thermostat
. Try moving your Wi-Fi router or extender to check
if the signal strength has improved.

Note: If disconnected from Wi-Fi, it will show "Client not
connected."
Security This shows you what type of security your Wi-Fi network is
using: WPA, WEP, etc.
Interface This tells you the Nest thermostat's Wi-Fi network interface
which is typically "wlan0."
IPv4  
Address This is your Nest thermostat’s network IP address, which is
assigned by your router. You can also find the the thermostat’s
IP address on your Wi-Fi router’s list of connected devices.
Subnet mask A subnet mask is used to identify the network location of an IP
address. Most home networks use the default subnet mask
255.255.255.0.
Router This is the network IP address of the router that your Nest thermostat
is connected to.
IPv6  
Address This is your thermostat’s IPV6 network address, which is used
for Thread communications.
Prefix length Similar to an IPv4 Subnet Mask, an IPv6 Prefix length is used to
identify the network section of an IPv6 address.
Router This is the IPv6 address of the router that your Nest thermostat
is connected to.
Name servers This tells you the address of the Domain Name System (DNS)
server and backup DNS server used by your thermostat.
Search domains This is used if your Nest thermostat needs to resolve an
unqualified domain name. If not, it'll show "none."
Service Environment For most people it'll show "production." If you are participating in the
Nest Field Test program, it'll show "ft."
Last data upload The exact date and time of your thermostat’s last automatic
data upload to the Nest service. For more information, go to privacy FAQ.
Last cloud comm The exact date and time of your thermostat’s last communication with the Nest service. This syncs your Nest thermostat and the app so they can show you the same information.
MAC address This is the unique network ID assigned to your Nest thermostat’s network hardware when it was manufactured.

Sensors 

Current temp The current ambient temperature in the room determined from the Nest thermostat’s internal sensors. The temperature is also
displayed on the thermostat's temperature screen.
Target temp The temperature set on the Nest thermostat that the system is currently trying to heat or cool to.
Rel. humidity The relative humidity in the room measured by the Nest thermostat’s internal sensors.
Activity

This shows status information about the activity and light sensors in the Nest thermostat.

Note: A sensor can be working normally and show a reading of 0.

Equipment 

Equipment sensed on

This shows which terminals on the Nest thermostat base
have wires in them. This is determined by the physical position
of the terminal button, not by wire voltage.

Troubleshooting: If the wires listed here don't match what wires
are actually in the thermostat terminals, check that the wires
are fully inserted and that the terminal button stays down.
Also check that there isn't anything (such as a broken wire end)
jamming any of the terminals.

Display 

Where

The location name given to your Nest thermostat during setup.

Note: You can change the name by going to Settings  Where 
on the thermostat or with the app.
Software version

This shows the software currently installed on the Nest
thermostat.

Nest thermostat software update history

Model The model number of your Nest thermostat display. This varies between different models and generations of Nest thermostats.
Serial number Your Nest thermostat’s display has a unique serial number.
Device ID A device ID that’s unique to your display.
Unlocked This shows if your thermostat is locked or unlocked.
Time Zone The time zone for the Nest thermostat is based on the ZIP code entered during setup.

Base

Model The model of your Nest thermostat base.
