Place your Google Nest Protect on the ceiling to monitor both smoke and carbon monoxide levels. If you have additional questions on where to install your alarm, follow the guidance of fire and local authorities.
Generally, you’ll need to replace your current smoke and carbon monoxide alarm when installing Nest Protect. However, you should be aware that existing alarms may not be installed in the right place. Make sure that you have the right number and placement of alarms for your home even if you already have alarms installed.
Rooms in your home that need a Nest Protect
The diagrams below show where Nest Protect should be installed according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).
In addition to these guidelines, state and local jurisdictions may have their own requirements for alarm type, placement, and installation. Please consult your local building codes and fire authorities to determine additional requirements that may apply in your location.
- Mark where the screws will go using Protect’s backplate as a guide.
- Installation on the ceiling is recommended.
- If you’re installing on the wall, make sure Protect is within 12 inches (30.5 cm) of the ceiling.
- If you have a sloped, peaked or cathedral ceiling, Protect should be located within 36 inches (91 cm) horizontally of the peak, but not closer than 4 inches (10 cm) vertically to the peak.
