This article will walk you through how to set up your Google Pixel Tablet for the first time, or after a factory reset. You can copy what's on your current device to your Pixel Tablet, or set up your Pixel Tablet as a new device.
How to set up your Pixel Tablet and Charging Speaker Dock
Step 1: Get started
- If your Pixel Tablet is turned off, press and hold the power button on the edge of your tablet, close to the rear camera. If your tablet is already on and the screen is off, press the power button once to wake it up.
- When the welcome screen appears, tap Get started.
Step 2: Connect to Wi-Fi
- Tap the wireless network you want to connect to.
- To skip this step, tap Set up offline.
- Enter the password for your Wi-Fi network, if it has one.
Step 3 (optional): Copy apps and data
- When you're prompted to copy your apps and data from another device, tap Next.
- To skip this step, tap Don't copy.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to copy data from a different device.
- If you have your old device, tap Next and follow the onscreen instructions.
- If you don't have your old device, tap Can't use other device? OK.
Step 4: Sign in with your Google Account
For the best Pixel Tablet experience, follow the on-screen instructions to sign in with your Google Account and password. You need a Google Account if you want to get apps from the Google Play Store and access email, contacts, calendar, and other personalized apps and features.
If your account is managed by a school or employer, follow the on-screen instructions to proceed. If your account has 2-Step Verification set up, verify your account before you sign in.
Step 5: Google services and device backup
- Scroll down, then choose the services you want to use. You can choose whether or not your tablet:
- Uses your location
- Scans for Wi-Fi networks and devices
- Sends usage & diagnostic information to Google
- At the bottom, tap Accept.
- On the “Google services: Back up your device“ screen, select what type of data you want to back up tap Turn on backup.
- If you don’t want to back up your tablet, you can also tap Don’t back up.
Step 6: Legal terms and limited warranty
- Read the additional legal terms tap I accept.
- To read your limited warranty, tap the country where you bought your Pixel Tablet tap Next.
Step 7 (optional): Set a PIN or password
You can set up a 4-digit or 6-digit PIN or password you can use to unlock your tablet.
- Follow the onscreen instructions.
- When you're done, tap Next. After setting up the PIN, you need to re-enter it and tap Confirm.
- If you don't want to set up a PIN or password, tap Skip.
Tips:
- If you want to use a different screen lock option, tap Screen lock options.
- You can set up a PIN or password later if you skip this step. Learn how to set up a fingerprint, PIN, pattern, or password.
Step 8 (optional): Set up Fingerprint Unlock
- To set up a fingerprint, tap I agree.
- To skip this step, tap No thanks.
- Follow the onscreen instructions to set up a fingerprint.
- To add another fingerprint, tap Add another.
- When you're done, tap Next.
Tip: You can set up a fingerprint later if you skip this step. Learn how to set up a fingerprint, PIN, pattern, or password.
Step 9 (optional): Set up Google Assistant
When you set up Assistant, you can use phrases like "Hey Google" to play music and videos, set timers, control smart home devices, and more. To skip Assistant setup, tap Skip.
- Choose Assistant features to use when your tablet is locked tap I agree.
- Teach Assistant how to recognize your voice tap I agree and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Activate Voice Match so Assistant recognizes your voice when you say "Hey Google" tap I agree.
Step 10 (optional): Set up Gemini
When you download the Gemini mobile app and set Gemini up as your primary assistant, it will replace Google Assistant when your tablet is unlocked. Your Pixel Tablet will continue to use Google Assistant when locked, including when in Hub Mode. Learn how to get started with the Gemini mobile app.
Important:
- When your device is locked, Google Assistant will continue to handle your requests.
- If Google Assistant needs you to unlock your Pixel Tablet to complete a request, Assistant may pass your request to Gemini. For example, you’ll need to unlock your tablet to access your calendar or email account with voice commands.
- When Gemini is your mobile assistant when your tablet is unlocked, it can help you with some of the same tasks as Google Assistant. Some familiar features from Google Assistant may not be supported in Gemini, which is still evolving. Learn more about what you can do with your Gemini mobile app.
- If a feature you rely on from Google Assistant isn’t supported in your Gemini mobile app, you can switch to Google Assistant. Learn how to switch to Google Assistant.
- Google will process your Gemini Apps data as described in the Google Privacy Policy and the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice.
Step 11 (optional): Get email updates
- To get updates about Google's hardware products, tap Yes, I'm in.
- Otherwise, tap No thanks.
Step 12 (optional): Learn how to navigate your tablet
You can find and manage apps, access your device’s settings, and quickly return to the Home screen with navigation gestures.
- To try some gestures, tap Try it.
- To skip this step, tap Skip.

Step 13: Transfer data and install apps
- When asked to “Copy Apps & Data,” tap Next Copy your data.
- Follow the on-screen prompts to transfer data and install apps.

You're ready to start using your Google Pixel Tablet. To go to your Home screen, swipe your finger up from the bottom of the screen.
Step 14 (optional): Set up Hub Mode
When you finish setting up your tablet, you'll get a prompt to dock your tablet to a Charging Speaker Dock and set up Hub Mode. Hub Mode gives easy access to Google Assistant, weather, notifications, and more to anyone in your home.
