You can translate live text conversations and videos on your Pixel Tablet. Learn how to ask the Google Assistant to translate your conversation with interpreter mode.
Turn on Live Translate
- Open your device's Settings app.
- Tap System Live Translate.
- Turn on Use Live Translate. By default, Live Translate will be on.
- Optional: To set a new default target language:
- Tap Translate to.
- Select a language.
- Tap Select Language.
- Optional: Add more source languages:
- Tap Add a language.
- Select a language.
- Tap Select Language.
Languages supported with Live Translate
- Chat: AR, DA, DE, EN, ES, FA, FR, HI, IT, JP, KO, NL, PL, PT, RU, SV, TH, TR, VI, zh_CN, and zh-TW
- Media: DE, EN, ES, FR, IT, and JP
Translate text messages
When you turn on Live Translate, you can translate text messages on some chat apps. All translations take place on-device.
To switch between the original and your chosen language, tap the language bubble.
To update language preferences:
- Open a text conversation that’s in another language.
- Tap the translate chip.
- In the Drop-down , update the translation languages.
To translate a single message:
- Open a text message that’s in another language.
- Touch and hold to select text.
- Tap Copy .
- Tap Translate copied text.
Tip: To translate the full page, tap the Drop-down menu Translate full page.
Translate text with your camera
You can translate text you find on things like menus and signs using your camera.
- On your Pixel search bar, tap Lens .
- Take a photo of the words you want to translate.
Translate captions on media
To switch caption languages on media like videos, podcasts, video calls, and audio messages, tap the live caption. To turn on live caption, press the volume button and tap Live Caption . Learn more about Live Caption.
